(SONG # 1)

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

MOST OF US HAVE BROTHERS OR SISTERS! IF NOT, AT LEAST WE HAVE LIVED IN HOUSEHOLDS WHILE GROWING UP, WHERE A FAMILY LEARNS TO LIVE TOGETHER AND SHARE THE THINGS THEY HAVE. AT TIMES, ALL OF US HAVE JUST THOUGHT, “I WISH I COULD HAVE MY OWN ROOM, OR MY OWN BATHROOM, OR MAYBE EVEN MY OWN APARTMENT OR HOUSE. THIS SOUNDS GREAT ON THE SURFACE, BUT SOMETIMES WE DON’T ALWAYS THINK THROUGH THE THINGS WE ASK FOR. WHY DO I SAY THIS? BECAUSE NO ONE LIKES TO BE ALONE!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU FELT ALONE OR WERE LONELY? NOBODY LIKES TO BE ALONE, AT LEAST ALL OF THE TIME. HOW MANY OF US LIKE TO GO OUT TO A RESTAURANT AND EAT ALONE? HOW MANY OF US WANT TO GO TO THE GAME AND SIT ALONE WITH NO ONE TO TALK TO OR TO VISIT WITH? HOW MANY OF US REALLY BELIEVE WE WOULD BE HAPPY AND CONTENT TO JUST BE BY OURSELVES ALL OF THE TIME?

IMAGINE BEING STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND. YOU MAY HAVE BEEN ASKED BEFORE WHAT WOULD BE THE ONE THING YOU WOULD WANT IF YOU WERE STRANDED ALONE? SOME MIGHT SAY CABLE TELEVISION, SOME MIGHT SAY A RADIO, BUT MOST, WITH SERIOUS THOUGHT WOULD SAY - COMPANIONSHIP! WHY? BECAUSE NO ONE LIKES TO BE ALONE!

GOD REALIZED THIS FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF HIS CREATION. IN GEN. 2:18, AFTER CREATING MAN, GOD SAID, “IT IS NOT GOOD THAT MAN SHOULD BE ALONE; I WILL MAKE HIM A HELPER COMPARABLE TO HIM.” BECAUSE OF THIS, VERSE 19 SAYS THAT GOD MADE A WOMAN OUT OF A RIB FROM THE MAN. EVEN OUR CREATOR REALIZED THAT MANKIND NEEDS COMPANIONSHIP.

WE MUST ALSO REALIZE WHERE WE CAN FIND THE GREATEST COMPANIONSHIP - THAT IS IN JESUS CHRIST. IN MATT. 28:20, JESUS SAID “LO, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, EVEN TO THE END OF THE AGE.” HERE WE SEE THAT GOD IS WITH US FOREVER, WITHOUT END. HOW ENCOURAGING IT IS TO REALIZE THAT NOT ONLY IS JESUS WITH US, BUT HE WILL ALWAYS BE THERE FOR US - FOREVER. THE WORD ALWAYS HELPS US TO REALIZE THIS POINT OF OUR DISCUSSION. GOD IS ALWAYS WITH US, AT EVERY MOMENT. HOW LONG? FOREVER. WHAT OTHER COMPANION OF OURS PROMISES THIS?

WE HAVE A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF GOD’S COMPANIONSHIP IN JOSHUA 1:9. THERE JOSHUA SAID, “HAVE I NOT COMMANDED YOU? BE STRONG AND OF GOOD COURAGE; DO NOT BE AFRAID, NOR BE DISMAYED, FOR THE LORD YOUR GOD IS WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO.” NOW WE ADD THE IDEAS THAT GOD IS WITH US EVERYWHERE WE GO. BECAUSE OF THIS JOSHUA SAID WE SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID OR DISMAYED, BUT WE SHOULD BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS. I HOPE WE ARE STARTING TO REALIZE WHAT THE LORD’S COMPANIONSHIP MEANS TO US.

IN PSALM 139, KING DAVID PUT IT THIS WAY, “WHERE CAN I GO FROM YOUR SPIRIT? OR WHERE CAN I FLEE FROM YOUR PRESENCE…? HERE WE SEE THAT DAVID ELOQUENTLY HELPS US TO UNDERSTAND THAT GOD IS WITH US ALL THE TIME. HE FURTHER HELPS US TO REALIZE THAT WHILE GOD IS WITH US HE IS CARING FOR US. THAT’S WHY WE ARE TOLD TO CAST OUR CARES ON HIM, BECAUSE HE TRULY CARES FOR US. THAT IS HOW HE CAN HELP US SO MUCH, BECAUSE HE IS ALWAYS WITH US.

THIS MORNING WE HAVE A GUEST SPEAKER WITH US, BROTHER JERRY SULLINS. BROTHER JERRY IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE BIBLE INSTITUTE OF MISSOURI. WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE BROTHER SULLINS WITH US TODAY AS WE CONTINUE OUR SERIES OF STUDY CONCERNING THE CHRISTIANS, “WALK WITH GOD! OUR SPECIFIC TOPIC OF STUDY TODAY WILL BE, “WALKING IN TRUTH.” SO, PLEASE CONTINUE WITH US THIS MORNING, AND AFTER OUR NEXT SONG TOGETHER BROTHER SULLINS WILL RETURN WITH THIS STUDY FROM GOD’S WORD. THE NAME OF OUR NEXT HYMN, “SOFTLY AND TENDERLY!”

LESSON

By Jerry Sullins

Welcome again to The Living Word broadcast! We are so thankful that you have allowed us to come into your home this morning, to view the television to present to you another message from God’s word. We are in a series of very important subjects that deal with the Christian life and this morning I have the opportunity to speak to you the subject concerning walking in truth as children of God. It is a very important subject in fact in the book of 2John 4, there is only one chapter in the book of John, the scripture says and John says, “I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father.” Now we see from this verse that there is such a thing called truth and there is such as thing that is called a commandment. Many people like to talk about truth but they don’t like to talk about commandments but here John makes it very clear that in order for us to be of the truth we have to do His commandments and we have to walk in His commandments.

First of all let’s consider what the word truth itself actually means. One person said that it is the essence of a matter; it is something that is possible through the establishment of facts. So when we speak of truth we are talking about facts when we ask someone to tell us the truth. When we ask our children to tell us the truth we are asking them to tell us what the established facts are, what are the exact things that happened, what is the exact word that you spoke? We are just wanting them to tell us something that is true. Of course the opposite of truth is a lie. So for consideration this morning we need to understand that our attitude toward truth is very important; of course attitude means a state of mind or feeling. Many people believe that it is not very important for us to establish truth, that the truth sort of vacillates and one person can believe this and another person can believe another thing, and although they are opposing things still both are true. How can that be when we look at God’s word because God’s word is not a document that tells us one thing and then tells us another thing that allows us to believe different things concerning and establish truth based upon facts. So our attitude is very important. Some people are not favorable toward the truth, some people are indifferent to the truth. Well, so you believe this I believe that, it is just sort of indifferent. Some people are hostile toward the truth, if you tell them certain things they don’t want to hear that are directly from God’s word then they get hostile, they get mad, they get upset because they do not want to hear the truth. Some people are just bitter, bitter toward God and bitter toward those who proclaim the truth, they just don’t want to hear the truth to such a degree that when they hear it, it puts a sour taste in their mouth, a sour place in their soul, and they just don’t want to listen to you. They are very bitter because they don’t believe that God should have proclaimed such as things, they don’t believe that God should have commanded such a thing. But the fact is my friends and brothers and sisters in Christ there is truth that is revealed to us that must be followed, that is given to us by our heavenly Father.

Now the writer of the book of Proverbs said this in Proverbs 23:23 He said, “Buy the truth, and sell it not or do not sell it…” The truth is so important. Remember what Paul said, maybe you do or maybe you don’t, in 2Timothy 4, after He had said in verse 2, “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” He said, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers…” having itching ears in other words they will seek to have people preach to them what they want to hear, “…and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned away to fables.” They will be turned to fables, which fable is just mans story, it is not based upon God’s truth it is just a story of man. So they will get in such a condition Paul said in the later days, which we are living in those later days that they won’t want to hear the truth anymore. So it is when we look around us everyday, it is around us everywhere we see people who are not only ignorant of God’s word but maybe somewhat ignorant of God’s word and may know some of God’s word and even the part of God’s word that they know they are still not willing to accept God’s word, to believe it, and to obey it. Well my friend this is not an attitude that we should have.

Pilot asked the question when he had Jesus before him and he was trying to decide now what am I going to do with Jesus. Pilot asked Him a question, asked Jesus a question, after they had been discussing the kingdom and he actually asked Him about truth and Jesus motioned to Him about the truth and then He said He came into the world to manifest truth basically. Then Pilot asked the question and who knows why Pilot asked that question, if he was sincere or if he was not sincere, but he said, “What is truth?” Well I am here today to proclaim to you what is truth from God’s Holy word. Jesus said John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Jesus is that truth, He is representative of those established facts, He is the essence of the matter, and as far as salvation is concerned, He is the essence of the matter as far as the sacrifice that God the Father was willing to make to come down on this Earth and it says definitely in the Bible Jesus speaking of Himself, he said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. NO one comes to the Father except through Me.” Now He taught a group of men and we refer to them as the disciples, they later on became apostles but one Judas who hanged himself because he actually betrayed Jesus. Those men whom Jesus sent out to all the world would know the truth, in fact He made a promise to them in John 16:13, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth…” So the Holy Spirit will guide you to all truth. Then in the very next chapter that chapter that some refer to Jesus really His prayer that is the Lord’s Prayer made this statement to His disciple, “Sanctify them…” that is set them apart, set the people apart, “…by Your truth Your word is truth.” He went on to say in chapters 14-17 and even throughout many parts of the Gospel accounts that they would not have to worry about what they would have to speak because the Holy Spirit would give them those words that they were to speak. Then on the day of Pentecost, as is recorded in Acts 2, the disciples stood up and they preached through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that is the inspired words of God through the Holy Spirit. They spoke in many different languages and they proclaimed the truth of God’s word.

Truth is able to achieve, some people say it’s absolutely impossible to know truth. Well, I ask these people how do you absolutely know that? Well, I’d rather accept what the Bible says, John 8:32, Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, ant he truth shall make you free.” Now friends all we have to do is find out what that truth is that will set us free from sin because God promised, is God a liar? Certainly not, forgive me to even mention His name with the same word as liar. God is not one who does not tell the truth and He told us the truth that you shall know the truth, Jesus was God by the way, you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. And it was the Apostle Paul in 2Thessalonians 2:13 which spoke of how believing the truth will keep us from being condemned. We sanctify ourselves in obedience of the truth, that is what purifies our souls as is recorded in 1Peter 1:22. A verse that is found in John 2, 1John 2:4 says this, “He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” Now that is a pretty strong statement. John speaking through inspiration of the Holy Spirit, by the way these are the words of God, what did God tell us? He who says I know Him but does not keep His commandments, that are my commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in Him. How do we know that we are in Him, the next verse? How do we know that we are in Him is because we are doing His word, we are keeping His word, and that is the way that we know that we are in Him. Truth is a matter that is of ultimate importance, we must do what the Bible says. Yes we see very clearly in the text that is the word of God itself, that we can know the truth and fail to do the truth and because of that we can be lost. We can know that truth, we can obey certain parts of the truth and get us into Christ and not live the truth as we talked about this morning I the beginning of this lesson in 2 John 4 and we are not walking in truth, we know we are not keeping His commandments. God is not in us when we fail to do that.

So as Christians we have to be very concerned that we are contending, not only walking in the truth but concerning for the truth because it is that which saves not only us and our obedience through the truth but it saves others. In the book of Galatians 3, and if you have your Bibles with you lets turn over to Galatians s 3. See what the apostle Paul says to these people who were still trying to hold onto some of the tenants of Judaism and let’s see what they had to say about there maintaining the truth. This is in Galatians 2:3-5, he said this, “Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. And this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage), to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that they truth of the gospel might continue with you.” So we see throughout the scripture how important it is to keep the truth. Paul was withstanding those brethren who were coming in secretly by stealth like a stealth bomber, and they were trying to lead these Jewish Christians back into Judaism and the Apostle Paul said we did not cease to tell them what the real truth of God’s word was and to stand for the truth.

We know that as the Bible reveals to us in so many places like 1Corinthians 5:11-13, 2Thessalonians 3:6, 2Thessalonian 2:4, and other verses there in 2Thessalonians. We know that it is impossible for those who are not maintaining the truth in their lives, following God’s commands, to be acceptable to God. In fact the Bible says and we as Christians need to observe what our Brothers and Sisters in Christ are doing to encourage them to maintain truth in their life and if they fail to do that to lead them in a pathway of righteousness even to the point if we have to of withdrawing fellowship from them. To encourage them the maximum thing that we can do to show them the greatest expression of love to say, ok you are not going to follow Christ anymore, you are not going to do what Christ expects you to do , so therefore we have no more fellowship with you. Maintaining truth in our life is of upmost importance.

Following the truth to become a child of God is something that you who are not in Christ need to really consider this morning. Remember Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free…” Now my friend I’m going to tell you what the Bible says concerning being free from your sin. Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? Jesus said, “Except you believe that I am He you will die in your sins.” So you say well yes I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that is wonderful, and we are so glad that you do believe that He is the Son of God. Are you willing to repent of your sins? Well now this same Jesus that said, “He who beleiveth and is baptized shall be saved,” said you must repent, “I tell you nay except you repent you will perish.” Are you willing to turn away from sin, to commit your life to Christ? Are you willing to confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? That is part of the truth, Jesus says, “Confess me before men and I will confess you before my Father who is in Heaven.” (Matthew 10:32). And are you ready to be baptized into Christ for the remission of your sins? That great commission was what, “He that beieveth and is baptized shall be saved. We get into Christ by Baptism, Galatians 3:26-27. Now my friend after living a faithful Christian life when you have obeyed the Gospel you will have hope of eternal life.

So what are we striving to do today? To make you understand the importance of following the truth and following the commands that God has given you to follow. To make sure that you are obedient to Him in every way because I can tell you through God’s word is God’s word has spoken to us this morning that we must buy the truth and not sell it, that we must obey the truth to obtain eternal salvation.
