LESSON TITLE: “IS THERE A LITERAL HEAVEN AND HELL?”
“CHRIST IS HEAD OF THE CHURCH AND SAVIOR OF THE BODY!” WHAT A PRIVILEGE WE HAVE THIS MORNING TO ASSEMBLE TOGETHER BEFORE OUR HEAD AND SAVIOR, THAT WE MAY STUDY GOD’S LIVING WORD. WE ARE HAPPY YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO BE WITH US TODAY AND ARE EXCITED ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY WE HAVE TOGETHER TO GLORIFY OUR KING OF KINGS. MAY WE EACH DO OUR PART TO MAKE THIS TIME ACCEPTABLE IN HIS SIGHT AND ACCORDING TO HIS WILL. NOW, LET’S APPROACH OUR FATHER’S THRONE IN PRAYER.
IT’S NOW TIME TO START OUR PRAISE THROUGH SONG. WON’T YOU JOIN IN THE FIRST HYMN OF THE MORNING, AS WE TOGETHER SING, “TAKE MY LIFE AND LET IT BE!”
(SONG # 1)
IN THE BIBLE, WE OFTEN READ ABOUT THE FAMILY OF GOD AS IT IS COMPARED TO A PHYSICAL BODY! IN ROMANS 12: 4-5, WE READ, “FOR AS WE HAVE MANY MEMBERS IN ONE BODY, BUT ALL THE MEMBERS DO NOT HAVE THE SAME FUNCTION, SO WE, BEING MANY, ARE ONE BODY IN CHRIST, AND INDIVIDUALLY MEMBERS OF ONE ANOTHER.” PAUL SAID, AS CHRISTIANS, WE ARE ALL A PART OF THE ONE BODY OF CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD AND WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS! ISN’T THAT HOW OUR BODY WORKS? MANY PARTS, ALL WORKING TOGETHER, YET SERVING DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS, SO THAT THE BODY MAY BE ABLE TO FULFILL ITS NEEDED WORK.
FURTHERMORE, AS WE TALK ABOUT FULFILLING OUR PART IN THE BODY OF CHRIST WE NEED TO CONSIDER A FEW QUESTIONS. WHAT PART OF THE BODY ARE YOU? HAVE YOU FOUND YOU TALENTS AND ARE YOU USING THEN FOR THE LORD? PROBABLY MANY OF US ARE NOT! WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CONSIDERED WHAT YOUR SPECIAL TALENTS ARE? WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU PUT THOSE TALENTS TO WORK FOR THE LORD’S BODY?
THE BIBLE IS FULL OF EXAMPLES THAT TEACH US THAT WE MUST ALL DO OUR OWN PART FOR JESUS. WE ALL REMEMBER THE STORY OF THE “TALENTS,” IN MATTHEW 25. THE MASTER GAVE EACH OF HIS SERVANTS TALENTS. TO ONE HE GAVE 5, TO ANOTHER HE GAVE 2, AND TO ANOTHER HE GAVE 1. EACH SERVANT LATER RETURNED TO THE MASTER. THE 5 AND 2 TALENT MEN HAD DOUBLED THEIR TALENTS AND THE MASTER WAS WELL PLEASED. THE ONE TALENT MAN CAME BACK ONLY WITH THAT WHICH THE MASTER HAD GIVEN HIM.
NOW LET’S SEE WHAT THE MASTER SAID TO THE ONE TALENT MAN IN VERSE 26, “YOU WICKED AND LAZY SERVANT…” THE MASTER WAS UPSET THAT THIS SERVANT HAD DONE NOTHING WITH WHAT HE HAD BEEN GIVEN. ALSO, NOTICE THE OUTCOME OF THIS UNPROFITABLE SERVANT. IN VERSE 28 WE FIND THAT HIS TALENT WAS TAKEN FROM HIM AND GIVEN TO ANOTHER. THEN ON DOWN IN VERSE 30 WE READ, “AND CAST THE UNPROFITABLE SERVANT INTO THE OUTER DARKNESS. THERE WILL BE WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH.”
ARE WE USING OUR TALENTS FOR THE GLORY OF GOD OR ARE WE SITTING AROUND LIKE THE LAZY SERVANT? WHY NOT FIND YOUR TALENTS AND BE A PROFITABLE SERVANT IN THE KINGDOM OF THE LORD. CHOOSE TODAY TO BE A HEALTHY PART OF THE BODY OF CHRIST!
TODAY WE WILL AGAIN BE CONSIDERING A LESSON FROM OUR SERIES WHICH IS ENTITLED, “TEACHING AS DOCTRINE THE COMMANDMENTS OF MEN!” OUR SPECIFIC TOPIC THIS MORNING WILL FOCUS ON THE QUESTION, “IS THERE A LITERAL HEAVEN AND HELL!” SO STAY WITH US AND IN A FEW MINUTES OUR SPEAKER OF THE MORNING WILL LEAD US IN THIS STUDY FROM GOD’S WORD.
AS FAR AS OUR SPEAKER, WE ARE HAPPY TO AGAIN HAVE BROTHER JERRY SULLINS WITH US TODAY AS OUR GUEST SPEAKER. BROTHER JERRY IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE BIBLE INSTITUTE OF MISSOURI. WE THANK HIM FOR BEING WITH US THIS MORNING TO LEAD US IN OUR MAIN THOUGHTS FROM THE BIBLE.
NOW IT’S TIME TO JOIN IN OUR SECOND HYMN OF THE MORNING, THE NAME OF THE SONG, “STANDING ON THE PROMISES.”
(SONG # 2)

I’d like to welcome you again to The Living Word Broadcast and again it’s our pleasure to have you in our audience this morning. We hope and pray that everything that is said on this program today will be according to God’s word and we certainly invite you to open up your Bible’s with us as we study together some important lessons from God’s holy word. In our last few weeks or during our last few weeks we have been in a series that has to do with the doctrines of men verses the teachings or doctrines of God. How that we aught to make sure that we follow what God says as Jesus said but ‘in vain do they worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.’ So certainly we want to make sure that we follow what God’s teaching is for us and so we are striving in this last few weeks, have been striving, and are still striving to point out to you some different teachings that are being taught in the religious world today that need to be examined by every good and honest heart. And so this morning we are going to discuss a subject that from throughout the years I have heard people discuss and personally I can’t understand why they hold this view. They hold the view that there is no such thing as a literal hell. Well, it’s going to be the design of this lesson this morning to point out to you from God’s holy word that not only is there a literal heaven but there will be a literal place that is called hell. The Bible describes it very much in every way.
I’d like to begin our discussion with reading from what Isaiah the prophet said in Isaiah 35:8. A long time ago, hundreds of years before Jesus came to this earth the prophet Isaiah said, “A highway shall be there, and a road, and it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, shall not go astray.” What this basically points out to us is that there is a time that will be coming in the future, where there is a highway of holiness that God allows people to walk on and that people must walk on that Highway of Holiness. But yet we know that the Bible plainly states as we can read from other scriptures that there will be two results at the end of this world. That is there will be two places that are commonly referred to throughout the scripture. It is sort of a figurative way mentioned in Psalm 1 and I invite your attention as we read Psalm 1, many of you will recognize the familiarity of the verses, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly nor stands in the path of sinners nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord , and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings froth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” Now He speaks about another group of people here in this same Psalm, “The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” That was made very clear by the Lord God himself that there is going to be two end results of a person’s life, two possibilities. There is that way of holiness which is a person who is walking not in the counsel of the ungodly, he’s like the tree planted by the rivers of living water. Then there is that ungodly person who is like the chaff that the wind drives away who is going to be punished at the end of time. Now he’s not the only one, that is God himself is not the only one who says this through the holy scriptures, but yet we see in the Son of God the very like statement that’s found in Matthew 7:13-14 and we read, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” So there is what? There is a place that has a wide gate and a broad way that leads to what, that leads to destruction and many are there who go in there by. But there is a narrow gate and a straight path that leads to life eternal and few there will be that will find it.
The Bible definitely describes both of these destinations. So my friend basically we could liken our lives to, on this earth, as a journey and this journey is described in God’s word. Our life begins when we are born into this world, we live in this life, but yet all the time that we are in this life we are approaching another destination or another event which is the succession of life. James called it death for without the spirit the body is dead, so we know that the body is dead and is going to die. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” So we know that death is coming. Ecclesiastes 9:5 says, “For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.” In fact in Psalm 89:48 the Bible plainly says that no man shall live and not see death. So we are living in this life a life filled with dreams, dead lines, and there are so many things going on in life today I tell you sometimes I know we all believe can we make it through another day. But according to Solomon so many people are caught up into just the satisfaction or the idea that they want to gratify themselves and they do everything in this life, their very existence, is based upon wanting to do what they can do to gain more of this lives possessions and to base the value of their life on the things of this world. That pace never slackens but Solomon warned of the vanity of life in Ecclesiastes 1:14 he says the vanities of life are exposed in many ways in our lives because he experienced every one of them. There are so many areas in fact if you look in the book of Ecclesiastes there is about twelve different areas of life that he experienced and among those he had the greatest opportunity to be a man of wealth probably the wealthiest man who ever lived on the face of the earth. He had the opportunity to experience the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life in every way that he could experience it and his summation was that all is vanity. In face he said, “I have seen al the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 1:14) Now this is a man who is known to be the wisest man on the face of the earth and that day and time and possibly the wisest man who has ever lived other than Jesus Christ our Lord.
So wealth is not the answer to ones life. John said in fact in 1John2:15-17 that we should not love the world or the things of the world, “…for the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.” So there are two destinations clearly stated at the end of this life and my friend the question is what is going to be the end result of your life? The Bible speaks of it. Now people say, ‘Well I can believe that God prepares heaven for those who are righteous but I just cannot bring myself to understand and to believe that a loving God can prepare a place like hell and cast all of them righteous into that place.’ Well if we believe what the Bible has to say our loving God who is the apidomy of love is also the apidomy of justice. He is the apidomy of mercy but he is also the apidomy of making sure that everyone receives a just recompense of their reward, however they lived in this life they will be judged according to those things as Paul stated in 2Corinthians 5:10.
So what is hell? Well, it’s mentioned in the Bible over and over again but what amazes me is how people can take the Bible and say, ‘ You see the Bible says there is a heaven and here is description of heaven but they ignore what the Bible has to say about what the Greek says Gehenna which is making reference to hell fire. Well let’s look into the Bible in a casual way and see just exactly what the Bible has to say about hell itself. Well, it’s a place that is prepared for the devil and his angels, in Matthew 25:41 the unrighteous will be cast into utter darkness where there was weeping and gnashing of teeth, and to be present there with devil and his angels. Those who would be on the left side of Jesus as all the nations of the earth would be gathered before Him and He would separate the sheep from the goats. And those sheep depicting the righteous would go to an everlasting place of bliss but the unrighteous would go to an everlasting place of punishment pain and agony. My friend that’s what the Bible says. Those who do not obey the gospel will be there, 2Thessalonians 1:7-9, “And to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. And it says simply there that the unrighteous are going to be put in that fiery place that is called hell, a place of torment, erring Christians will go there those are those who have returned to the world, who have returned maybe to concepts of oh I don’t believe anymore that there is a Christ. They will burn in everlasting fire 2Peter 2:14-15. Then in Revelation 19:20 it simply states that all false teachers and those that deceived will be in that lake that burns with fire and brimstone.
Now what about that place is it easy to reach? Yes, it is the way of sinners as we just read in Psalm 1. Galatians 5:19-20, points out the sins of the flesh like adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, and all other types of sins are mentioned there. They who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of heaven. Well where are those people going? The answer is given in the Bible so when we turn to Revelation 21:8, we see very clearly what hell is going to be like, it says, “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Jesus is speaking here by the way and he is saying there is that place that is prepared for those who do not do my will, those who sin and have not regrets for their sin, and those who sin and have not obeyed the gospel. Is that fire everlasting? Matthew 9:40-48, that it is an everlasting fire. In Matthew 13:41-42 it is a place where there will be darkness and weeping and gnashing of teeth. It is not going to be a great existence in fact we will be burned with unquenchable fire it’s something that cannot be put out. Some people say oh that’s figurative well I will leave that up to you but as far as my Bible says it is a literal place. Just like is heaven figurative? Is it something that is just in the mind of man or is it actually going to be a place of bliss? Well, as heaven is going to be a place of bliss, hell is going to be a place of torment. It is a place of torment Revelation 14:11 and it will last forever and ever. Matthew 25:46 says, “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” This is a very, very serious question that we are dealing with today. Where will you spend eternity is the question. There is a scripture that is given in Galatians 6:7-9, which I think is so important to encourage you to do what is right, it says simply that we should not be deceived or, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption…” Now if there is anything taught in the Bible it’s taught that those who sin will have to give account for those sins and they will be punished for those transgressions.
The question is friends, how are you going to treat that in your life? What type of life are you going to live? You know some people have said in the past well it’s not really right to scare people but I tell you what I want to know what the Bible has to say about heaven and hell because if there is anything I want to do in life I don’t want to be in that place that’s called hell. I don’t care if you say it is figurative or whatever, I do not want to be there with the abominable, the sexually immoral, the liars, all those people who do all of those things in this life that are abominations and against God’s will. I don’t want to be with those people, I don’t want to be with them now and I don’t want to be with them in eternity. And how could God be a just God if he allowed them to go into the heavenly home as well as us? He would not be a just God if He did that because the justice of God has been laid out. Jesus came to die upon the cross to save us from our sins and if we fail to confess our sins then He is going to be the one who is going to take our lives and He will dispose of them in one of two ways at the end of time. So the decision is yours faith in Jesus Christ, belief that he is the son of God, confession of Jesus Christ as the son of God, repentance and turning away from sin being baptized into Christ for the remission of sins, and living a faithful Christian life my friends will make sure that you have that place in that wonderful place called heaven. The Spirit in the bride say come and he that will let him take of the water of life freely. It is your decision and you have the right to make that decision but rest assured of this one thing that at the end of time there are two destinations please choose the right way.
