LESSON TITLE: “BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN.”

WELCOME

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING FOR THE LIVING WORD PROGRAM. A WORK OF OUR LORD COMMITTED TO STUDYING HIS WILL AND TO DOING THINGS IN HIS WAY. AS ALWAYS, IT IS OUR HOPE AND PRAYER THAT EVERYTHING WE DO TOGETHER WILL BE EDIFYING TO EACH OF US, BUT ULTIMATELY IT IS OUR GOAL TO GLORIFY GOD, THE ALMIGHTY! LET ME ENCOURAGE EACH OF US TO DO OUR PART THIS MORNING IN MAKING THIS TIME TOGETHER PROFITABLE IN HIS SIGHT. NOW, LET'S TALK TO THE FATHER IN PRAYER!

PRAYER: LET ME ASK YOU TO BOW YOUR HEAD IN PRAYER. OUR GOD AND FATHER IN HEAVEN, WE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS DAY AND THE MANY BLESSINGS OF LIFE AND THE PRIVILEGE WE HAVE TO BE CALLED YOUR CHILDREN AND TO SERVE YOU AS YOUR CHILDREN. FATHER, HELP US THIS DAY AND EVERY DAY TO SHINE FORTH AS LIGHTS IN THIS WORLD AND ESPECIALLY TODAY ON THE LORD'S DAY. MAY WE DO ALL IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH AS YOU HAVE COMMANDED THROUGH YOUR WORD THAT WE MIGHT WORSHIP YOU AND YOUR HOLY NAME. FATHER, IN THE END GIVE US THAT GREAT REWARD OF ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN WITH YOU. ALL THESE THINGS ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH YOUR SON JESUS CHRIST. IN HIS NAME WE PRAY, AMEN.

THIS MORNING, WE WANT TO START WITH A SONG THAT REMINDS US OF THIS GREAT BLESSING WE HAVE IN THE WONDROUS CARE AND PROTECTION OF OUR GOD! WON'T YOU JOIN IN WITH THE CONGREGATION AS WE SING TOGETHER, "THE GREAT PHYSICIAN!"

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

WE ALL KNOW THAT OUR SERVICE TO GOD IS VERY IMPORTANT AS CHILDREN OF HIS. HOWEVER, WE OFTEN FORGET THE MANY DIFFERENT ASPECTS THAT ARE INCLUDED IN THIS SERVICE. LET'S TAKE A FEW MINUTES AND CONSIDER ONE IMPORTANT QUALITY WHICH WE MUST ALL HAVE TO FIND FAVOR WITH GOD. READ WITH ME THE WORDS OF PETER IN 1 PETER 5:5, THERE HE SAID, "YES, ALL OF YOU BE SUBMISSIVE TO ONE ANOTHER, AND BE CLOTHED WITH HUMILITY, FOR GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE." HERE WE ARE INSTRUCTED TO CLOTH OURSELVES WITH HUMILITY.

YOU AND I KNOW THAT HUMILITY IS SOMETIMES A HARD THING TO HAVE. ESPECIALLY IN A COUNTRY AND SOCIETY THAT HAS EVERYTHING TO OFFER, WHERE VERY FEW IF ANY HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT TRUE SUFFERING AND STRUGGLES ARE ALL ABOUT. EVEN MANY SONGS TODAY ARE WRITTEN ABOUT HOW HARD IT IS TO BE HUMBLE. LET ME REMIND YOU OF A FACT YOU MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN. WE MUST BE HUMBLE BECAUSE CHRIST WAS WILLING TO BE HUMBLE.

IN PHILIPPIANS 2:6-7, WE ARE REMINDED THAT JESUS WAS GOD, BUT YET HE WAS WILLING TO BECOME MERELY A MAN. THERE IT SAYS, "WHO, BEING IN THE FORM OF GOD, DID NOT CONSIDER IT ROBBERY TO BE EQUAL WITH GOD, BUT MADE HIMSELF OF NO REPUTATION, TAKING THE FORM OF A BONDSERVANT, AND COMING IN THE LIKENESS OF MEN." FURTHERMORE, IN VERSE 8 OF THE SAME TEXT, PAUL SAID, "AND BEING FOUND IN APPEARANCE AS A MAN, HE HUMBLED HIMSELF AND BECAME OBEDIENT TO THE POINT OF DEATH, EVEN THE DEATH OF THE CROSS."

JESUS WAS WILLING TO MAKE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE, TO LEAVE THE FATHER AND TO BECOME A MAN AND SUFFER - FINALLY TO THE EXTENT OF EVEN GIVING HIS OWN LIFE AS A SACRIFICE ON THE CROSS. NOW, YOU TELL ME AGAIN HOW HARD IT IS TO BE HUMBLE. THE FACT IS, IF CHRIST WAS WILLING TO HUMBLE HIMSELF IN SUCH A GREAT WAY FOR US, SHOULDN'T WE BE WILLING TO LEARN HUMILITY OURSELVES FROM THE MASTER TEACHER?

LET'S ALSO REMEMBER THAT THERE IS A REWARD TO THOSE WHO LEARN THIS GREAT LESSON. IN JAMES 4:10, WE READ, íHUMBLE YOURSELVES IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD, AND HE WILL LIFT YOU UP.ë ARE YOU WILLING TO PRACTICE THE HUMILITY THAT GOD WANTS YOU TO HAVE? REMEMBER THAT BEING CHRIST-LIKE IS LEARNING THE LESSON OF BEING HUMBLE AS HE WAS!

TODAY, WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE BROTHER BRENT GREEN WITH US AS OUR GUEST SPEAKER. BROTHER BRENT IS A FULL TIME INSTRUCTOR FOR THE BIBLE INSTITUTE OF MISSOURI. HE ALSO WORKS AS THE MINISTER FOR THE HWY 13 CHURCH OF CHRIST IN BOLIVAR. WE ARE GLAD HE HAS JOINED US TODAY TO LEAD OUR THOUGHTS FROM GOD'S WORD.

AS FOR OUR DISCUSSION THIS MORNING, WE WILL BE CONTINUING OUR SERIES ENTITLED "HAPPY ARE THE PEOPLE WHO'S GOD IS THE LORD!" OUR SPECIFIC TOPIC THIS MORNING IS, "BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN." SO PLEASE STAY WITH US AND AFTER OUR NEXT SONG TOGETHER, BROTHER GREEN WILL RETURN TO LEAD US IN THIS STUDY FROM GOD'S WORD. NOW, WON'T YOU JOIN IN WITH THE CONGREGATION AS WE SING OUR SECOND HYMN OF THE DAY, THE NAME OF THE SONG, "THE LAST MILE OF THE WAY."

LESSON

BY BRENT GREEN

WHAT A GREAT PRIVILEGE IT IS AS ALWAYS TO STUDY THE WORD OF GOD. IN PSALM 144:15, IT SAYS, “HAPPY ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN SUCH A STATE. HAPPY ARE THE PEOPLE WHOSE GOD IS THE LORD.” AS THE SERIES CONTINUES, THAT IS REALLY THE FOCUS OF WHAT WE ARE STUDYING FROM THE WORD OF GOD. IF YOU WOULD READ PSALM 144 IN ITS ENTIRETY, IT ACTUALLY TALKS ABOUT GOD AND ALL THAT HE DOES FOR HIS PEOPLE. IT TALKS ABOUT THE FACT THAT GOD IS A PROTECTOR AND WATCHER OF HIS PEOPLE. HE IS A DELIVERER, A SAVIOR, AND AN AVENGER. WHEN YOU READ THROUGH THAT PSALM OF DAVID, IT POINTS OUT VERY CLEARLY ALL THAT GOD DOES FOR HIS PEOPLE. HE CONCLUDES WITH THIS VERSE THAT WE JUST READ THERE IN VERSE 15. HOW HAPPY ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE GOD THAT WATCHES OVER THEM TO PROTECT THEM AND DELIVER THEM FROM ALL THAT WOULD COME THEIR WAY. TRULY GOD'S PEOPLE ARE A BLESSED PEOPLE.

WITH THAT IN MIND, WE THINK ABOUT EVEN MORE SO WHAT MAKES GOD'S PEOPLE SUCH A BLESSED AND HAPPY PEOPLE. INDEED THEY ARE HIS PEOPLE AND THEY HAVE HIS BLESSINGS. THEY ARE PART OF HIS FAMILY AND THEY ARE HIS. ALL THOSE THINGS BEGIN TO HELP US TO UNDERSTAND JUST HOW BLESSED, TRULY BLESSED, GOD'S PEOPLE ARE BUT THOSE TRULY BLESSED INDIVIDUALS OF GOD'S FAMILY HAVE TO TAKE ACTION. EVEN TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THAT FAMILY OF GOD REQUIRES ACTION. ROMANS 6:4, SAYS YOU MUST PUT YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR ON IN BAPTISM TO BE ABLE TO WALK IN THAT NEWNESS OF LIFE. ONCE YOU BECOME A CHRISTIAN THEN YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE TO TAKE ACTION. JAMES 2:18 TELLS US THAT OUR FAITH IS DEMONSTRATED BY OUR WORKS, SO WE HAVE TO BE A PEOPLE OF ACTION. GOD'S PEOPLE ARE BLESSED BECAUSE THEY ARE HIS PEOPLE. THEY ARE ALSO BLESSED BECAUSE THEY TAKE THE ACTIONS THAT GOD HAS REQUIRED THEM TO TAKE.

THAT LEADS US UP TO MATTHEW CHAPTER 5. WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES GOD'S PEOPLE SO BLESSED? WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES THEM A PEOPLE WHO ARE HAPPY PEOPLE? WE SEE SEVERAL THINGS GIVEN TO US IN WHAT WE COMMONLY REFER TO AS OF THE BEATITUDES, WHERE THE SCRIPTURE OVER AND OVER AGAIN SAYS BLESSED ARE THOSE. AND THEN BEGINS TO GIVE US THE REASONS WHY GOD'S PEOPLE ARE BLESSED. IN MATTHEW CHAPTER 5, SPECIFICALLY THERE IN VERSE FOUR, WE READ OF THOSE THINGS THAT AGAIN ENABLE US TO BE GOD'S BLESSED PEOPLE. ONE SUCH OF THOSE THINGS IS FOUND THERE IN MATTHEW CHAPTER 5:4. IT SAYS, “BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN FOR THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED.” NOW, ON THE SURFACE THAT SEEMS A LITTLE STRANGE. HOW IS IT THAT MOURNING COULD ACTUALLY BE SOMETHING THAT WOULD CAUSE US TO BE HAPPY? INDEED, THAT DOES SEEM LIKE A STRANGE CONCEPT. HOWEVER, FROM THE SCRIPTURE WE BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND AS WE LOOK AT THE PIECES OF THE CONCEPT HERE AND WHAT IT TRULY MEANS TO BE THOSE WHO ARE BLESSED THAT MOURN AND ALSO THOSE THAT RECEIVE COMFORT AGAIN FROM THE SCRIPTURES.

LET'S THINK ABOUT THE FIRST PIECE OF THAT. BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MOURN? I THINK THERE ARE PROBABLY SEVERAL SYNONYMS WE COULD GIVEN THAT YOU WOULD BE FAMILIAR WITH THAT WOULD HELP US TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MOURNING IS. SADNESS, SORROW, GRIEF, AND EVEN MORE SO HERE IS THAT REALLY DEEP MOURNING THAT EVEN SOMETIMES CAN'T BE CONTAINED WITHIN ONESELF. IT HAS TO BE EXPRESSED AUDIBLY THAT TAKES PLACE WHEN SOMEONE CRIES OUT LOUD BECAUSE THEY ARE SO FILLED WITH THIS TYPE OF SORROW. THAT'S A TYPE OF GRIEF THAT WAS SEEN IN MARK 16:10 WHEN THOSE WHO WERE JESUS' CLOSE FRIENDS AND FOLLOWERS WEPT OVER HIS DEATH. THEY WERE SORRY THAT JESUS WAS DEAD SO THAT'S THE TYPE OF WEEPING AND MOURNING HERE THAT WE HAVE UNDER CONSIDERATION. NOT JUST OVER THINGS LIKE DEATH, THAT WOULD INDEED BE PART OF IT, BUT EVEN OVER THINGS LIKE SIN. IN JAMES CHAPTER 4:8-9, JAMES ACTUALLY TELLS THOSE WHO ARE LIVING IN SIN TO LAMENT AND MOURN AND WEEP. BE SAD AND FILLED WITH SORROW BECAUSE OF YOUR SIN. THAT IS PART OF WHAT IT MEANS HERE TO WEEP AND TO MOURN IN THIS WAY. YOU SEE THAT USED THROUGHOUT THE NEW TESTAMENT IN VERSES LIKE 1CORINTHIANS5:1-2. THERE THOSE IN CORINTH HAD FAILED TO MOURN WHEN SIN WAS AMONG THEM. THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN SORRY THAT THERE WAS A MAN AMONG THEM WHO WAS GUILTY OF FORNICATION BUT THEY DIDN'T MOURN. PAUL HAD TO CALL THEM OUT ON THAT. PAUL ON OTHER OCCASIONS ACTUALLY MENTIONS THE FACT THAT HE DID MOURN OVER THOSE WHO WERE IN SIN. PASSAGES LIKE SECOND CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 12:21 SAYS HE WAS MADE SORROWFUL. HE WAS ONE WHO MOURNED BECAUSE HE SAW OTHERS STILL LIVING IN SIN. NO DOUBT THERE ARE MANY OCCASIONS IN WHICH WE MIGHT DEMONSTRATE SUCH GRIEF WHERE WE MIGHT BE FILLED WITH SORROW THAT WE CAN'T CONTAIN IT ANY LONGER IN OUR BODIES. THAT MOURNING COMES OUT AS WE WEEP AUDIBLY. INDEED, AS WE CONSIDER THE SCRIPTURE THAT IS WHAT WE SEE. FURTHERMORE, AS WE THINK ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE THOSE THAT ARE BLESSED, THAT IS THOSE WHO MOURN AND THOSE WHO ARE THEREFORE BLESSED, NOT ONLY WHAT IT MEANS TO MOURN BUT WHAT OCCASIONS WOULD THERE BE TO MOURN. WE'VE ALLUDED TO SEVERAL OF THOSE SO FAR AND THE ONE TO START WITH IS THE ONE OFTEN USED AS WE TALK ABOUT WHAT THIS VERSE MEANS AND THAT OF SIN BEING THE OCCASION THAT WOULD LEAD TO MOURNING THAT IS SPOKEN OF HERE IN MATTHEW 5:4. NO DOUBT THAT WE ARE IN SIN AND WE SHOULD BE FILLED WITH SORROW. PASSAGES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT LIKE EZEKIEL CHAPTER 7:16 AND ALSO PASSAGES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT LIKE WE JUST MENTIONED IN JAMES 4:8-9 SHOW US THAT WHEN WE HAVE SIN IN OUR LIVES IT SHOULD LEAD US TO MOURN. IT SHOULD LEAD US TO HAVE THAT GREAT SORROW THAT THEN PRODUCES WITHIN US THE DESIRE TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE THAT RIGHT. PAUL TALKED ABOUT THAT IN SECOND CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 7:6-10. HE HAD WRITTEN A LETTER TO THE BRETHREN OF CORINTH THAT HAD MADE THEM SORRY. IT SAYS GODLY SORROW PRODUCES REPENTANCE LEADING TO SALVATION. THEY WERE MADE SORRY. THEY WERE SORRY THAT THEY WERE IN SIN AND THAT THEIR SIN STILL HURT GOD AND CONTINUED TO NAIL JESUS CHRIST ON THE CROSS AND THEY SOUGHT TO MAKE IT RIGHT. GODLY SORROW PRODUCES REPENTANCE AND A CHANGE OF HEART, WHICH LEADS TO A CHANGE OF ACTION AND HOPEFULLY TO THEM FINDING THE SALVATION OFFERED IN THE SCRIPTURES. THERE IS A PLAN THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US. WE SHOULD BE SORRY WHEN WE SIN. BLESSED ARE THOSE THAT MOURN. THEY ARE SORRY THAT THEY HAVE WRONGED GOD BY THEIR SIN AND THEY SEEK TO MAKE THAT SIN RIGHT.

OTHER TYPES OF THINGS THAT WOULD CAUSE US TO MOURN, ACCORDING TO THE WORD USED HERE IN THIS VERSE, ARE THINGS LIKE SUFFERING, AFFLICTION AND TRIALS THAT WE GO THROUGH AS CHRISTIANS ALSO BRING MOURNING UPON US. WE SEE THAT ALSO IN THE SCRIPTURES. IN 2CORINTHIANS 1:4 AND ALSO JUST A FEW VERSES LATER IN VERSES SIX AND SEVEN TELLS US THAT GOD'S PEOPLE WILL INDEED BE AFFLICTED. THEY WILL GO THROUGH TRIALS AS THEY TRY TO STAY ON THAT STRAIGHT AND NARROW PATH. WHEN YOU ARE AFFLICTED AND GO THROUGH THOSE TYPES OF TRIALS, DOESN'T THAT BRING SADNESS? DOESN'T THAT BRING MOURNING TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE HAVING TO SUFFER. WOW, I'M HAVING TO ENDURE SOMETHING THAT IS SO HARD IN THIS LIFE. WE FACE THOSE TIMES AND THAT BRINGS GREAT SORROW UPON OUR LIVES. JAMES 1:2-3 TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO OVERCOME THE VARIOUS TRIALS. PETER SAYS IN 1PETER 1:7 THAT THE TRIALS OF THIS LIFE ARE A TEST OF FIRE. IF WE ARE GOING TO BE TRIED AND TESTED THEN NO DOUBT THAT WILL BRING MOURNING IN OUR LIVES. PROBABLY ONE THAT ALWAYS SHOULD COME TO MIND WHEN WE TALK ABOUT MOURNING IS THAT OF DEATH ITSELF. YOU SEE THIS ALSO IN THE SCRIPTURE LIKE MATTHEW 2:18 WHEN HEROD HAD ALL THOSE MALES WHO WERE UNDER TWO KILLED. WHAT WAS THE RESULT? THEY MOURNED, THAT IS THE PEOPLE WHO LOST THEIR CHILDREN WERE SAD OVER DEATH. DEATH IS A VERY SAD TIME AND A TIME THAT DOES BRING MOURNING INTO OUR LIVES. DEATH IS SOMETHING THAT IS ALWAYS THAT ELEMENT THAT IS GOING TO BRING THAT SADNESS IN OUR LIVES. 1THESSALONIANS 4:13-18 ALSO REMINDS US OF THAT TYPE OF SORROW WHEN WE EXPERIENCE SADNESS OVER DEATH. AS WE PUT ALL THESE PIECES TOGETHER AS IT RELATES TO THE FIRST HALF OF THIS VERSE, BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN, IT DOES SEEM STRANGE. IT ALMOST SEEMS LIKE A PARADOX. HOW COULD WE BE HAPPY AND HOW CAN WE BE BLESSED WHEN WE MOURN? WE ARE GONNA TALK ABOUT THAT IN A LITTLE BIT IN MORE DETAIL WHEN WE FINISH UNDERSTANDING WHAT THIS VERSE SAYS IN THE SECOND HALF: THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED. IT MAY SEEM STRANGE TO THINK ABOUT HAPPINESS COMING FROM THESE TIMES OF SADNESS OR SORROW BUT JUST BRIEFLY BEGIN TO THINK ABOUT THE ELEMENTS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT. YES, WHEN YOU ARE SORROWFUL AND WHEN YOU ARE FILLED WITH SORROW AND YOU MOURN BECAUSE YOU SIN BUT YOU COME BACK TO GOD, WHAT IS THE END RESULT? WHEN YOU SUFFER FOR THE CAUSE OF CHRIST IT IS TOUGH OF THE TIME BUT EVEN THE APOSTLES AS THEY SUFFERED IN MATTHEW 5 WHEN THEY WERE SCOURGED THEY WENT AWAY REJOICING. THE END RESULT THERE ALSO IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN THE SORROW THAT INITIALLY CAME UPON THE INDIVIDUALS SUFFERING THE TRIALS OF LIFE. EVEN IN DEATH, YOU MIGHT SAY. WHERE CAN I FIND JOY AND HAPPINESS AND COMFORT IN DEATH? THOSE WHO DIE IN FAITH KNOW THE WAY TO SOMETHING GREATER THAN THE THINGS FOUND IN THIS LIFE. BLESSED ARE THOSE THAT MOURN. WHETHER THEY MOURN FOR SIN OR SUFFERING OR DEATH. THERE IS A BLESSING, I WILL COME OUT OF THIS. WE REALLY BEGIN TO SEE THAT IN A MUCH DEEPER LIGHT WHEN WE LOOK INTO THE SECOND PART OF MATTHEW FIVE AND VERSE FOUR. BLESSED ARE THOSE THAT MOURN FOR THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED. THAT IS REALLY WHERE WE FIND THE GREATEST JOY IN THE SCRIPTURE. KNOWING THAT WE CAN FIND COMFORT WHEN WE OVERCOME SIN AND WHEN WE FACE SUFFERING AND WHEN WE OVERCOME THAT. EVEN WHEN WE FACE DEATH WE CAN FIND COMFORT IN GOD AND IN HIS WORD. WHAT COMFORT CAN WE FIND? FIRST UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS COMFORT IS AS WE TALK ABOUT IT. THE WORD USED MEANS TO CALL NEAR OR TO CALL TO ONES SIDE.THINK FOR A MOMENT WHEN A LITTLE CHILD GETS HURT IN SOME WAY. MAYBE THEY HAVE FALLEN OR THEY HAVE HURT THEIR LEG AND BEGAN TO CRY. WHAT WILL A PARENT DO? THEY WOULD CALL THE CHILD OVER AND EMBRACE THEM, THEY WOULD GIVE THEM A HUG AND REASSURE THEM THAT EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY. THE WORD HERE FOR COMFORT IS USED AND DEFINED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS IN ITS USAGE THROUGHOUT THE NEW TESTAMENT BUT HERE, AS IT IS USED IN MATTHEW 54, THAT'S WHAT IT HAS IN MIND. TO CALL TO ONES SIDE AND TO COMFORT SOMEONE WHO IS GOING THROUGH SOMETHING IN THIS LIFE. TO CONSOLE OR TO REFRESH OR TO BRING CHEER UPON SOMEONE, THAT IS THE PROMISE OF MATTHEW 5:4. BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN FOR THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED. THIS IS A PROMISE OF GOD. WHEN WE MOURN AND GO THROUGH THOSE THINGS, THERE IS AN END RESULT THAT WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO. REFRESHING, SHARING, COMFORTING OF THOSE INDIVIDUAL'S SUFFERING IN WHATEVER WAY THAT MIGHT BE.

IN WHAT WAYS DO WE RECEIVE COMFORT FROM THE SCRIPTURE? THINK ABOUT SEVERAL AND THESE RELATE TO THE IDEAS THAT WE HAVE ALREADY BROUGHT UP. THE WAYS IN WHICH WE ALSO ARE THOSE WHO ARE MADE TO MOURN. THINK ABOUT THE COMFORT THAT WE WOULD RECEIVE IN THOSE DIFFERENT AREAS. THIS IS WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. WHAT WAYS DO WE RECEIVE COMFORT? THE GOSPEL ITSELF GIVES US COMFORT. THOSE WHO WERE IN SIN AND LIVING A LIFE OF SIN, ONCE THEY REALIZED THAT THEY WERE FILLED WITH SORROW, IT PRODUCED REPENTANCE THAT LED THEM TO SALVATION. WHAT BROUGHT THEM COMFORT? WHEN THEY REALIZED THEY HAD FOLLOWED GOD'S PLAN COMPLETELY AND WHEN THEY HAD THEIR SINS WASHED AWAY. WHEN THEY WERE ADDED BY THE LORD TO HIS CHURCH BECAUSE THEY FOLLOWED THEIR SAVIOR THROUGH BAPTISM. THEY RESPONDED TO THE GOSPEL CALL AND WHAT WAS THE END RESULT? THEY WERE BROUGHT COMFORT. VERSES LIKE ISAIAH 61:1-3REMIND US THAT TO COMFORT ALL WHO MOURN. ACTUALLY THE PASSAGE RELATES TO THE ONE WHO WOULD BE COMING IN THE FUTURE AS IT RELATED TO ISAIAH'S DAY AND THE ONE WHO DID COME IN CHRIST JESUS. CHRIST USED THAT PASSAGE OF HIMSELF IN LUKE 4:18. THE IDEA WAS THAT HE CAME TO BRING COMFORT TO ALL WHO MOURN. IN WHAT WAY? IN NO WAY DID HE COMFORT ALL WHO MOURNED PHYSICALLY BUT ALL WHO MOURN SPIRITUALLY BECAUSE OF THEIR SIN. SALVATION IS OPEN TO ALL IN CHRIST JESUS. CAN YOU FIND COMFORT IN A WAY TO OVERCOME SIN? MOST CERTAINLY YOU CAN. THAT'S WHAT WE SEE IN THE SCRIPTURE THAT THOSE WHO FIND SALVATION IN CHRIST AFTER MOURNING THEIR SINS AND AFTER COMING TO CHRIST AND FOLLOWING HIS PLAN, THEY FIND SALVATION FOR THEIR SOULS. THEY FIND THAT COMFORT THAT ONLY CHRIST CAN OFFER. BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN OVER SIN. THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED IN THE GOSPEL.

WE ALSO FIND COMFORT AMONG OUR BRETHREN. EARLIER WE MENTIONED SECOND CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 7 AND THE EXTENT OF THAT PASSAGE GOING FROM VERSE 6-13 IS WHERE WE FIND THE UNDERSTANDING THAT EVEN OUR BRETHREN CAN BRING US COMFORT. THERE IN THAT PASSAGE, PAUL HAD WRITTEN A LETTER TO THE BRETHREN IN CORINTH THAT HAD MADE THEM SORRY. HOWEVER, THAT SORROW LED TO THEIR REPENTANCE AS IT WAS MENTIONED IN VERSES 9-12. WHEN TITUS BROUGHT BACK WORD TO PAUL THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED AND THAT HIS LETTER HAD BROUGHT THEM TO REPENTANCE BECAUSE IT HAD FILLED THEM WITH SORROW, THAT BROUGHT PAUL COMFORT. WE READ ABOUT THAT IN VERSE 6. PAUL WAS COMFORTED BY THE MOURNING WHEN HE HEARD THE REPORT OF THE BRETHREN IN CORINTH. TITUS HIMSELF WAS ONE WHO COMFORTED PAUL AND EVEN TITUS HAD FOUND COMFORT IN THE BRETHREN AT CORINTH WHEN THEY HAD REPENTED. WE FIND COMFORT AMONG BRETHREN. PAUL WAS COMFORTED BY THE BRETHREN IN CORINTH, TITUS WAS A COMFORTER OF PAUL, AND TITUS WAS COMFORTED BY THE PEOPLE IN CORINTH. WHEN WE DEAL WITH THINGS IN THIS LIFE, WHERE CAN WE FIND COMFORT? AMONG OUR BRETHREN. COMFORT IS ALSO FOUND IN THE FAITH OF OTHERS, 1THESSALONIANS 3:7. WE REALIZE THAT WE'RE ON THIS NARROW PATH TOGETHER AND WE LOOK TO OTHERS WHO ARE HOLDING TO THE FAITH. WHAT SHOULD THAT BRING US? IT SHOULD BRING US COMFORT AND THAT'S WHAT THE SCRIPTURE INDICATES.

THE RESURRECTION ALSO BRINGS US COMFORT. UTICUS, WHO FELL OUT OF THE WINDOW AFTER LISTENING TO THE PREACHING IN ACTS 20, WHEN HE WAS BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE WHAT DID IT BRING HIM AND THOSE CLOSE TO HIM? IT BROUGHT THEM COMFORT AND THAT'S WHAT IT ALSO DOES FOR US. AN UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS LIFE ISN'T ALL THERE IS. THERE WILL BE A RESURRECTION SOMEDAY FOR ALL. IN MATTHEW CHAPTER 11 JESUS SAID COME TO ME ALL YOU WHO LABOR AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST. WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE RESURRECTION BECAUSE IT MEANS WE WILL ENTER INTO THAT REST EVERLASTING WITH OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. GOING TO THE PLACE OF HEAVEN WHERE THEY WILL BE NO TEARS SAYS REVELATION 21:4.

FINALLY, IT IS GOD WHO BRINGS US COMFORT. WE CAN AGAIN GO TO THE SCRIPTURE LIKE THAT FOUND IN 2CORINTHIANS 1:3-4 GOD IS THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT. IT IS GOD WHO WE OURSELVES ARE COMFORTED BY. AS YOU READ THOSE VERSES IN THE SCRIPTURE, WE REALIZE THAT ALL COMFORT COMES FROM GOD. AGAIN, AS WE CONNECT BACK TO PSALM 144:15 WE ARE HAPPY IF GOD IS OUR GOD. THE GOD WHO LOOKS AFTER US AND PROTECTS US DOES FOR US ALL THAT WE NEED. BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN FOR THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED AND COMFORTED BY GOD.
