LESSON TITLE: “The New Creation.”

We are excited to have you with us today for the Living Word Program. What a wondrous Lord’s Day morning it is.

As always it is an honor and privilege to have you with us. We are thankful you have chosen to join us as we commit this time to the things of God.

It is our hope and prayer this morning that we may each participate and do our part to make this time acceptable before Him and according to His Word. Now let’s begin by talking to God through prayer!

It’s time to being our first song of praise this morning. So, won’t you join in with the congregation at this time as we sing together, “Walking In Sunlight.”

(SONG # 1)

Whenever we go to buy a new house, car, furniture or virtually anything - the first thing we look at is the outward appearance! Then we immediately begin to consider the quality or the workmanship that was put into making the item. If we see or find a lot of flaws or imperfections in the item, we generally will be less likely to buy it or even want it.

Have you ever considered that you and I as followers of God, serve the same purpose to those who are in this world? Wasn’t it Paul that said, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them,” Ephesians 2:10. You see, we are God’s workmanship, created by Him. So, what does this tell us about those who live aroun

d us and see what we do and say. It is through our actions and words that our workmanship is seen by the world. When others hear what we say or see what we do, then they know that we are either a perfect creation made by the workman, God Himself - or an imperfect creation, not showing forth the glory of He who made us.

I also love what is said here about why we are created - for good works. Do you realize that the very reason we are made by God and like Him, is to do His will. This is something that God planned from the beginning, that you and I would follow Him by doing His will unto good works.

What a beautiful picture of Christ we can present to this world if we allow our workmanship to be seen as spotless, just as the one who has made us. What type of workmanship do you show forth for your God?

A final verse I would like to mention is found in Psalms 139:14. There David the Psalmist said, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.” In a few minutes our next song will deal with these very same ideas, as we think to Christ the creator, who has made us so wonderfully and done so much for us.

Well, it’s almost time to begin our study from God’s Word. Our specific topic today will again focus on the question, “What Is Man? Our specific lessons this morning is entitled, “The New Creation.” This is our final lesson in this series. So, please continue with us this morning and in a few minutes we will return with this study from God’s Word.

Today we are happy to again have brother Jerry Sullins with us as our guest speaker. Brother Jerry is the Director of the Bible Institute of Missouri. We appreciate this good brother and thank him for being with us today to lead our thoughts from God’s Word. Now let’s join in our second song of the morning, the name of the hymn is, “Trust And Obey.”

(SONG # 2)

By Jerry Sullins

Welcome again to The Living Word broadcast and as always we are so happy to have you in our viewing audience today. We hope and pray that what is said may be strengthening to you as those who desire to know God’s Will and to do His Will. We know that that’s the only way we will ever make it to heaven and that is that we seek to do His Will and that we do it faithfully throughout our lives and then we will have hope of eternal life. We are ending this series that we started a few weeks ago this morning on, “What is Man?” We have discussed many aspects on what is man, that he is made a little lower than the angels, that he is to be brought glory and honor also because of his desire to do God’s will. And we know that all of these things that have been presented to us have been presented from God’s Holy Word.

This morning I would like to look at the prospect of what man can really be in Christ. There are many scriptures that tell us in the Bible what can be the final result of man if he is in Christ. One such scripture is found in 2 Corinthians 5:17 where it says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new.” So a man can be a new creation, one version says a new creature, now how does that happen, “Old things have passed away; behold all things have become new.” Do you realize that the bible says that we can experience a new birth in Christ? Yes we certainly can! Remember when Jesus was speaking to Nicodemus in John 3:3, he said basically, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Then again He said in verse 5 to this same person, “…unless on is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” So my friends it is more than possible, it can become a reality in every one of our lives to be in Christ and to be that new creation. Now that means something, it just doesn’t mean that now we can hang a cross around our necks or maybe a sign saying that we are a Christian and have to do that because people can’t tell. It means that we have experienced a new birth that is a wonderful possibility.

Basically, there are two types of people on this earth and they are the religious people and those people who are non-religious and in both cases they can be lost. I call your attention to Acts 2 which makes reference to both types of people. In Acts 2:5, and we realize that this was the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was going to light upon the apostles and they were going to proclaim the precious message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the first time, it was on that day that 3,000 were baptized into Christ and added to the Lord’s Church Acts 2:47. It says in verse 5, “And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.” So there were righteous people in Jerusalem at that time who were faithful people to the cause of God, they were assembled there. But also look at verse 36, it says, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Now there were righteous people in the city of Jerusalem who definitely believed that Jesus was the Christ. Otherwise why would about 3,000 be baptized that day? But there were also a group of Jews in that city who were not righteous, who were lost people because they failed to recognize that this Jesus whom they had crucified was both Lord and Christ. About 3,000 did but there were thousands of others who did not. So there were two general classes of lost people that is those people who are religious and those people who are non religious. Then there are two types of lost religious people those who are lost because of their religious error.

If you have the chance today or an opportunity turn to second Thessalonians 2:10-12 and it talks about those religious people who were believing lies. Now evidently someone is teaching something that is not true in the religious world today, Matthew 15:9, “But in vain do they worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” You as yourself know that you believe that there are religious people who are ignoring what the scripture has to say and preaching and teaching what they desire to preach and teach no matter what the Bible might say. In fact we have all heard people say before pointing to the scripture it doesn’t matter what the scripture says, I believe what I believe. Well that could be true and probably is true but it does matter what the scripture says because it is the scripture that is inspired of God, that is profitable for doctrine for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God might be complete and thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

So there are one group of religiously lost people who are those who just totally denied the authority of the scripture, whatever the scripture says really doesn’t matter to them, or some parts of the scriptures really don’t matter to them. Then there is that group of people who are lost religious people who have basically erred from the truth. These are mentioned throughout the New Testament but I call your attention to James 5:19-20 where it talks about if we are able to convert a sinner from the error of his way we have saved a soul from death and we have hid a multitude of sins. The soul from death that it is speaking about here is those people who once became new creatures in Christ. Now our being a new creature in Christ is not based upon social things; some churches are literally, as they might even tell you, are nothing but social institutions. Not based upon our political position, our financial ability, how smart we are, or what type of education we have achieved, it’s based upon whether or not we are in Christ or not. Back to 2Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” Yes, we have been born again, we are in Christ. Look at Galatians 3:26-27, there is says, “For you are all the sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” So how do we get into Christ? We are baptized into Christ, that is what the scripture says and we will talk about that further on in our lesson even today, so he is a new creature.

There are many times in the history of mankind where salvation has been found in a certain place. In the day of Noah, where was salvation? It was in the ark, Genesis 6. In fact Peter even mentioned it in 1Peter 3:20-21, “The like figure where into even baptism does also now save us, not the putting away of the fifth of the flesh but the answer of a good conscience toward God.” He says the like figure of what? As Noah was in the Ark his three sons that is his wife and three sons and their wives, they were saved in the ark so you see there was a specific place where they would be saved. Remember the Passover? The great Passover feast that’s held once a year by every faithful Jew even to this day is commemorating the time when the angel of death would pass over their homes and safety and only safety was found in those homes where the blood of a lamb was wiped on the door post and the mantels. My friend salvation was in those homes, outside of those homes there was death and today salvation is found in Christ. Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature old things have passed away behold all things have become new. So God has ordained that salvation be in Christ, God has ordained that we would become new creations or new creatures in Christ as the scripture is said and old things have passed away.

Now this is so easy to look into the scripture and see how it true. If you turn to Romans 6, and you would just turn to Romans 6 just for a few moments as we view this wonderful truth, we see there that these people were being born again, they were being baptized. Look at verse 3, “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death, therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead from the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we should be also in the likeness of His resurrection.” Now what happens, verse 6 says when that takes place, “The old man of sin has been destroyed.” Now what did Paul say again in 2Corinthians 5:17, if any man be in Christ old things have passed away. Now that old thing is being in bondage to sin because the body of sin, the man of sin, is destroyed. Also very interesting is what is found in Ephesians 4:22, the old corrupt life is destroyed not because God just takes something and destroys that life but because a person has been born again and they no longer want to live that corrupt life. Now the sad fact is today that many people and I might even say most and you probably agree with me, most people are not too concerned about how corrupt a life they live. If you don’t believe that just watch any television program on any network and you will see that that is not something that is really paid attention to very much. That is what does God want? Because you can see every type of sin that God condemns promoted on every one of those programs. So are people concerned about corruptness? No but I tell you what a person who has been born again is concerned about that because his old life, his old corrupt life, has been destroyed and that alienation from God has been removed. He is no longer alienated from God because his sins have been washed from his mortal body, from his soul, and his spirit he stands pure and just before God. He is that new creation and he acts like that new creation and that brings you to the second part of 2Corinthians 5:17, “…old things have passed away; behold all things have become new.”

No doubt we have all seen that person who has come to Christ. They have been baptized unto Christ for the remission of their sins and they arise to walk in a new life. And you can see it, they want to know what’s involved in walking in the new life, they want to do what is involved in walking in that new life. They realize that they are a new creation, they have been born again by the blood of Jesus Christ their Lord and so they want to live the life that God wants them to live the life that God wants them to live. They are that new man in Christ Ephesians 4:23-24 because they have received the forgiveness of their sins. They have received the promise of eternal life and that is when these people decide, they even decide that before they are baptized usually, they decide that I must exemplify Christ in my life in every way that I can because they are what? They have been born again, John 3:3-5. They have done what? They have become a new creature, a new creation 2Corinthians 5:17. And in old things the way they once were because they have repented and turned away from those things are old, sin has been destroyed, and now they want to live as Christ wants them to live.

What a wonderful blessing it is for us to realize as we become a new creation we literally become the sons of God according to 1John 3:10. We become heirs of God and joint heir with Christ, Romans 8:14-17. We realize that we are now a child of God, we have been saved by the blood of Christ, we are indeed a new creation because we want to put away those old things and we want all things to become new. Now my question for you this morning is, are you in Christ? That’s a good question for you to ask yourself. Have you done what is necessary to get in Christ? Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creation. Are you a new creation? Are you a new creature in Christ? Have you been born again? That is a very good question for you to ask yourself. Well, do you believe that Jesus is Christ the son of God, Jesus said that except you believe that I am He you will die in your sins. Can you actually get into Christ without believing He is the Son of God? Well, certainly not. You must repent that means a change of mind takes place, “I no longer want to serve sin,” a change of will, “I am not going to serve sin,” and a change of life style you are willing to make that change in your lifestyle that means old things have passed away behold all things have become new to you. Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to confess His precious name before men? It was Jesus who said if you confess me before men I will confess you before My Father who is in Heaven and I will remind you what Paul said in Galatians 3:26-27 he said, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” So my friend I ask you simply this, how could you be a new creation unless you are willing to do what Jesus asked you to do? What a precious promise, we all want new beginnings. The greatest new beginning on the face of the earth is for one to do what Jesus desires for them to do so that they can become that new creation in Christ, that new creature in Christ, old things passed away; behold all things becoming new. Can you believe what this world would be like if this world would turn to Christ. We hope and pray that this will happen that many thousands upon thousands will obey His will and have that precious and wonderful opportunity to say I have been saved by the blood of Christ and also realize now that I have been saved by the blood of Christ. I am a new creature in Christ. I am a new creation and therefore I must always live for Him to inherit heaven.
