Program Air Date – 2-24-13

In Exodus 4:14, we read, “So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses….” Do we know what the Bible says about anger?

As always it is an honor and privilege to have you with us for the Living Word program. We are thankful you have chosen to join us as we commit this time to the things of God.

It is our hope and prayer this morning that we may each participate and do our part to make this time acceptable before Him and according to His Word. Now let’s begin by talking to God through prayer!

Our First Song this morning is a song of praise about Jesus. So, won’t you join in with the congregation and do your part as we sing together, “To God Be The Glory.”

(SONG # 1)

When was the last time you started feeling your face warm up, and turn red from the heat? Maybe your hands began to sweat or shake from emotion! We’ve all been there and done that. What are we talking about? Getting mad!

Some of us even this morning have already been angry about something. Did your alarm clock go off too early? Maybe you spilled something while making breakfast? Did that coffee get on your clean shirt you just put on? “When will that paper man ever learn, he’ll never get it where I want it!”

It doesn’t take much does it? We seem to get upset over the most insignificant things. When will we ever learn? This is not what God wants.

We see two kinds of anger spoken about in the Bible! One is a Godly anger. It is not wrong to get upset about something as long as we control our anger! How can we prove this, let’s look into God’s word.

Even God gets angry, so we can not say that all anger is wrong or sinful. God does not sin. Also, in Matthew 21 we see that Jesus himself went into the temple and threw out those who were using it for buying and selling goods. In verse 12 we read, “Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.” Does this sound like someone who was upset and mad? Did He have a reason to be? Certainly He did!

So you see a controlled Godly anger is acceptable, as long as we remember we are Christians and that we must be like Christ. Some sinful situation may even merit an active anger, just as with Christ. However, we must remember that all things must be done in a controlled fashion and for God’s glory, not our own.

The other anger which the Bible speaks of is an uncontrolled anger! Paul puts this type of ungodly anger among other sinful things that Christians must put away in Ephesians 4:31.

You see, giving into anger and allowing it to get out of control, allows us to give place to the devil, as we read in Ephesians 4:27. In verse 26, Paul also said, "be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath….” I think we are beginning to see the difference between being upset and allowing that anger to turn into wrath. One is a controlled response, the other is not.

Finally, let’s keep in mind that an uncontrolled anger leads us into many other sins which are unacceptable to God. When we get mad we may start doing many things that are contrary to God’s will. We start to think things and say things we shouldn’t. We also might start doing things that we shouldn’t, which hurt those around us whom we are supposed to love.

Are you keeping your anger in check when you get upset at someone or a situation? Are you allowing others to see Christ in you?

This morning, we will be continuing our series entitled, “What Have They Seen In Your House.” As far as our specific lesson today we will consider being an example in, “God’s Design For Marriage.” So, please continue with us this morning and in a few minutes our guest speaker will return with this study from God’s Word.

We are happy to have brother Jerry Sullins with us once again. He is the director of the Bible Institute of Missouri. After our next song together, he will be leading our main thoughts from God’s Word. Now let’s join in that second song together. The name of the hymn is, “This World Is Not My Home.”

(SONG # 2)

By Jerry Sullins

Welcome again to The Living Word Broadcast, we are so thankful that you chose us again this morning or maybe it is the first time that you have viewed this program. We are very thankful for your presence and we are glad that you are with us. We hope and pray that what is said will strengthen you in understanding what God’s will is for all of us in today’s world. Clearly it is stated in the Bible because we realize as Paul told Timothy that all scripture is given by inspiration of God is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God might be complete thoroughly furnished unto all good works. So we have God’s word and it is our responsibility to look into God’s word and to know what His will is for us. After all He is our creator, He is our Father in Heaven so we seek to want to know and do His will. I want to advertise something to you just shortly this morning and that is we have a new program that’s coming on every Sunday Morning and actually it is the transmission of every sermon or every meeting that we have at the Kansas Expressway Church of Christ. All you have to do is to log in to and you will see a place where you can click on that place and you can go directly to viewing our 9:30 Sunday school adult class which will be shown every Sunday morning. Then you will be able to be a part of the viewing of our morning worship period which starts at 10:30 and then our evening worship which begins at 5. Now Ray is doing most of the preaching on those Sunday’s and you will be able to hear the word of God preached and proclaimed. And I’m sure it will enrich us all as we seek to do just that. For the last week or so we have been studying about the Christian home or the home as God would want it to be. What an important subject. I have noticed throughout the years of my preaching and you can tell by the way I look that I may have been preaching for a very long time and yes it has been over fifty years. But during my ministry throughout this country as well as throughout the world especially in Africa I have found a great interest on the subject whenever it is discussed that is the home and especially the Christian home. For people who live in all countries, and all lands, and who are among all tribes basically follow God’s plan for the home as it was from the beginning. This was stated in Genesis 2:24, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” They ‘cleave to’ in the original language means they are fused together in heaven above by God Himself and they become one what, on flesh. Basically as we look throughout all of the world we see that people are following this basic pattern you might ask yourself why? Because from the beginning that is the way it has been.

Now our modern society has done a lot to destroy what God has to say about a home. Now you can look into different sources and get modern day definitions and you can see that the definition of a home is expanded well beyond what God would authorize it to be. I am speaking specifically as it relates to same sex unions or what they refer to as marriage. There is no such marriage that is of same sex marriage actually condoned in God’s word in fact the contrary is the case. If one man under the old law sought to be with another man in any relationship that is sexual then they were both condemned and taken outside the city gates and stoned to death and such would be also women. But yet we see at least I believe its 7 states now that have sanctioned what God has not authorized that is for a man to come together with a man and be married or a woman to come together with a woman and be married. This is not what God intended.

There are many things done in our society today which God does not approve of and which He does not authorize and that is one of those. Another thing is and I’m sure it’s because of all the ills that our young people see in marriage and by the way this is not just something that is involved with our young people but I know of middle aged couples and older couples who just decide all of the sudden well we don’t need to be married we will just come together and live together. They are talking about living together and having relationships that is in a sexual way. Well, my friends, although the world does not understand this God’s word again condemns such a thing.

Just in one series of verses alone I call your attention to Galatians 5:19-21 where Paul pointed out, the Apostle Paul pointed out, by the way these are the words of God the Father given through the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul as he was inspired to speak these words of God. And God said this, “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness…” and it goes on to mention many others. But those first three, adultery that is someone having a relationship that is sexual in nature with someone who is already married. Or someone having a sexual relationship, that is fornication, would involve a sexual relationship of any kind which is not ordained by God which would include bestiality. Then uncleanness involves those who are involved in homosexual relationships. My friends God condemns these things but yet our society approves of them, at least some of our society approves of them. Unfortunately those who are in control of our society are now in the position of maybe even making it a law where we cannot even speak of such things. Well, I will assure you of one thing there will be some of us who continue to speak, and as some of our brethren have said to me and I’ve said to them, they better get the jail house built a little bit larger because we are not going to cease to teach and preach what God’s will is for human kind.

Let us be clear about this that in Malachi 2:16 and this relates to a person who was married to the wife of His youth and to all other marriages it says there that the God of Israel hates divorce. Divorce is something that is not allowed as far as God is concerned as it relates to what is revealed to us in the scripture but for one reason.

Now I want to read to you a passage of scripture if you have your Bible please open your Bibles to Matthew 19:1-9. I am going to read the entire text and then we will discuss it thoroughly and hopefully have enough time to come to a conclusion. First of all let’s just begin in verse 3, “The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him and saying to Him, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?’…” We will explain that in just a few moments, “…And He answered and said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’…” A man and a woman, a man shall be joined to his wife. Not a man with a man or a woman with a woman but a man with a woman. “…So then they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.’ Then they said to Him, ‘Why then did Moses command to give a certain certificate of divorce and to put her away?’ He said to them, ‘Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so…” And here is the truth of the matter, from the lips of Jesus the Son of God actually God Himself, “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immortality, and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” Now what we see here is something that our laws do not follow today, you know that. Just recently I was in court, not for my own sake but for the sake of someone else just supporting this person. Out of the 20 some odd cases that came before the judge that day about 20 of them were there because of desiring to have a divorce. Guess what the reason was for those divorces being granted, can we find it in the Bible? We certainly cannot. The reason given was irreconcilable differences. Now our government allows abortion do I agree with abortion? No, not under any circumstance because God’s law would forbid such. Our nation allows in many places for the same sex to be married and to be joined together. I do not agree with that because God’s law does not agree with that. Our nation may agree to allow people to divorce just for any reason and they lump it all together and say irreconcilable differences. But just because our nation or our laws say that that is true there is one law that supersedes, overshadows, all other laws and that is God’s law. And God says you can only be divorced if it is for the reason of fornication.

Now let’s break down this phrase or sentence and we will see what God really says. “Whoever…” that means anyone whether they are a Christian or not a Christian. The law that was applied in Genesis 2:24 that is what God wanted that a man should leave his father and mother and cleave to his own wife is something that God desires of all people whether they be Christian or not. “Whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery…” Puts her away for what reason? “Except for fornication,” what does that mean? That means that if my wife goes out and is unfaithful I can put her away, I can divorce her, because she has committed fornication. That is what Jesus says. Then it goes on to say that whoever marries her that is put away for a reason other than fornication is also guilty of violation of God’s law because he has married someone who has been put away for a reason other than fornication. Now His disciples said in verse 10, we didn’t read that verse, His disciples said, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” Well, in some cases that could be true and it is a hard saying, it is a hard saying as Jesus said because we find so many people today in our nation or this world who are divorced for a reason other than what God has given. That is the reason it is hard because sometimes children are involved, there are many circumstances which cause the life to be in turmoil. What is most important? The most important thing is that we adhere to God’s law if it is indeed against God and against God’s law for us to do such that is to divorce our mate for a reason other than fornication. That my friend, that my brother and sister in Christ is called sin, a transgression of God’s law.

So who can you marry? Well, if you have never been married you can marry an eligible partner. That is not someone who has been put away but for the reason of fornication, that person you should not marry, that person is not eligible to get married until the other party has committed fornication. Those who have been previously married but whose former companion is dead, you can marry them whom you will as long as you strive in a way to seek an eligible partner according to God’s word not mans word. Those who have been previously married but whose former companion was guilty of fornication then you are allowed to marry an eligible partner. That would be the teaching of Matthew 19:1-9. You cannot marry someone who has been put away for a cause other than fornication; you should not do that because that would be forbidden in God’s law. Those who marry anyone who has a former companion still living who was not put away because of fornication you need to be very careful because that person very well may not be a subject or a person that you could marry. Now my friends we are dealing with a very serious matter because over fifty percent of our marriages today in the United States of America end in divorce. I would say that is a pretty serious problem. Most of those people are not guided by God’s word they are guided by what they see on television. Well, haven’t you noticed yet that what you see on television is not something that you can see is authorized, most of it is not authorized nor do they follow God’s plan. I mean every sitcom will show you that that is the truth. If you believe and understand and know what God’s will is for you today as far as living your life in this world according to His will you will readily recognize that that is the case.

So what would I suggest to you? Understand what God wants for you in your marriage. Do everything that you can. Here is a major thing, when you make a lifetime commitment don’t say those words that you swear before God that you are going to keep them till death do you part unless you mean them. If you truly mean that and you are committed to them because you understand what God’s will is for you that is the only way that you will ever be able to completely do God’s will. It is your commitment to God and His word. So I encourage you today, I’m not trying to discourage you, I encourage you to get right with God to do His Will as it relates to marriage. God loves you and He wants you to be saved but He wants you to do His Will. If we do His will we have opportunity for eternal life so please we are praying for you and you pray for us that we may all seek to do His will.
