LESSON TITLE: "TEARS OF REPENTANCE"

WELCOME

TODAY WE ARE BLESSED WITH A WONDERFUL GIFT FROM GOD, THE BIBLE. THIS BOOK IS GOD'S LIVING WORD. IN ITS PAGES WE ARE TOLD "FOR THE WORD OF GOD IS LIVING AND POWERFUL AND SHARPER THAN ANY TWO-EDGED SWORD." IT IS IN THIS BOOK OF BOOKS THAT WE FIND THE ANSWERS TO ALL OF MAN'S QUESTIONS AND NEEDS. THIS MORNING YOUR AREA CHURCHES OF CHRIST WELCOME YOU TO A PROGRAM COMMITTED TO THAT PERFECT LAW OF LIBERTY. AS WE PRESENT THE LIVING WORD. NOW HERE IS YOUR HOST RAY SULLINS.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING FOR THE LIVING WORD PROGRAM. IT IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO HAVE YOU WITH US FOR THIS TIME OF PRAISE AND HOMAGE TO GOD. IT IS OUR DESIRE THIS MORNING TO DO ALL THINGS IN ACCORDANCE TO HIS WILL, AS WE SING SONGS AND STUDY FROM HIS WORD. MAY WE ALL PARTICIPATE AND DO OUR PART, IN THIS TIME OF WORSHIP TO GOD. LET'S BEGIN OUR OFFERING TODAY WITH A WORD OF PRAYER, BOW WITH ME PLEASE.

PRAYER: OUR GOD AND FATHER IN HEAVEN, WE ARE SO THANKFUL FOR THIS DAY AND EVERY DAY OF LIFE. WE ARE THANKFUL FATHER BECAUSE YOU ARE A GREAT GOD AND THE CARING GOD AND WE KNOW THAT EVERYTHING WE HAVE PHYSICALLY AND SPIRITUALLY COMES FROM YOU. AND FATHER, WE ASK THIS DAY THAT YOU MIGHT HELP US TO LIVE ACCORDING TO YOUR WILL AND TO BE LIGHTS IN THIS WORLD THAT OTHERS MIGHT KNOW YOU AND OBEY AS WELL, ULTIMATELY THAT WE MIGHT ALL BE BLESSED IN THIS LIFE AND RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE IN THE END, THAT TIME TO COME. IN JESUS NAME WE PRAY, AMEN.

IT IS OUR PRIVILEGE THIS MORNING, AS WE BEGIN OUR WORSHIP TO GOD, TO SING A SONG OF PRAISE BEFORE HIS THRONE. OUR FIRST SELECTION OF THE MORNING REMINDS US OF JUST HOW SPECIAL OUR SAVIOR IS, AS HE WAS WILLING TO DO SO MUCH FOR US, EVEN GIVING HIS OWN LIFE ON THE CROSS FOR YOU AND ME. SO WON'T YOU JOIN IN WITH THE CONGREGATION AS WE SING TOGETHER, "THERE IS POWER IN THE BLOOD!"

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

WOW, THE INTERNET IS AN UNBELIEVABLE TOOL IN OUR DAY AND TIME. PRACTICALLY EVERY DAY, I RECEIVE REALLY GOOD STORIES AND ILLUSTRATIONS THAT HELP ME TO BE A BETTER PERSON. A FEW WEEKS AGO I RECEIVED A REALLY NEAT ARTICLE WHICH REMINDED ME OF HOW GREAT MY GOD IS, THE ONE WE ALL SERVE. ONE EXCERPT FROM THIS EMAIL WENT LIKE THIS: WHEN I FALL, HE LIFTS ME UP! WHEN I FAIL, HE FORGIVES ME! WHEN I AM WEAK, HE IS STRONG! WHEN I AM LOST, HE IS THE WAY! WHEN I AM AFRAID, HE IS MY COURAGE! WHEN I STUMBLE, HE STEADIES ME! WHEN I AM HURT, HE HEALS ME! WHEN I AM BROKEN, HE MENDS ME! WHEN I AM BLIND, HE LEADS ME! WHEN I AM HUNGRY, HE FEEDS ME! WHEN I FACE TRIALS, HE IS WITH ME! WHEN I FACE PERSECUTION, HE SHIELDS ME! WHEN I FACE PROBLEMS, HE COMFORTS ME! WHEN I FACE LOSS, HE PROVIDES FOR ME! AND WHEN I FACE DEATH, HE CARRIES ME HOME! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL AND WONDROUS STATEMENT THIS IS ABOUT OUR ALL ENCOMPASSING GOD, WHO PROVIDES OUR EVERY NEED AND RELIEVES OUR EVERY CARE.

I THINK WE OFTEN FORGET JUST WHAT TYPE OF GOD WE SERVE AND ALL THAT HE TRULY DOES FOR US. ANOTHER STATEMENT IN THE SAME ARTICLE SAID THIS ABOUT OUR GOD, "HE IS EVERYTHING FOR EVERYBODY, EVERYWHERE, EVERY TIME, AND IN EVERY WAY; HE IS GOD, HE IS FAITHFUL, I AM HIS AND HE IS MINE!" PRAISE BE TO GOD FOR THESE PRECIOUS PROMISES AND TRUTHS WHICH WE ALL MUST BELIEVE IN.

IN FACT, THINK HOW MUCH EASIER LIFE CAN BE IF WE BUT PUT OUR TRUST AND FAITH IN A GOD LIKE THIS. AS THE ENCOURAGING OLD SONG SAID, "WITHOUT HIM I AM NOTHING." BUT REMEMBER WHAT THE APOSTLE PAUL SAID, "WITH HIM, I AM AND CAN DO EVERYTHING". GET BACK TO SERVING THIS ALMIGHTY GOD TODAY, OR IF YOU ARE NOT PRESENTLY DOING HIS WILL, START SERVING HIM TODAY, ACCORDING TO WHAT HE COMMANDS. AS WE HAVE SEEN TOGETHER, IT IS WORTH THE EFFORT, IT IS WORTH THE PRICE.

IT IS WONDERFUL TO HAVE WITH US BROTHER KEVIN PATTERSON BACK WITH US THIS MORNING, AS OUR GUEST SPEAKER OF THE DAY. BROTHER PATTERSON NOW LIVES IN FLORIDA AND PREACHES FOR A CONGREGATION THERE. BROTHER KEVIN WILL BE LEADING US IN OUR BIBLE STUDY OF THE MORNING AFTER SINGING OUR NEXT SONG TOGETHER. AS FAR AS OUR SERIES, WE ARE STILL CONSIDERING ANOTHER LESSONS FROM OUR SERIES ENTITLED, "MINDFUL OF YOUR TEARS." OUR SPECIFIC LESSON OF THE DAY WILL FOCUS ON, "TEARS OF REPENTANCE." SO STAY WITH US AND WE WILL ENTER INTO THIS DISCUSSION IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. NOW LET'S SING OUR SECOND HYMN OF THE MORNING, ITS NAME, "I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVES."

LESSON

BY KEVIN PATTERSON

GOOD MORNING AND THANK YOU FOR STAYING WITH US. AND LET ME SAY THIS MORNING WHAT A PRIVILEGE IT IS TO BE BACK WITH YOU, BACK IN THE OZARKS AND BACK ABLE TO SPEND A TIME STUDYING GOD'S WORD WITH YOU HERE ON THE LIVING WORD. IF YOU'VE EVER BEEN A PART OF A BIBLE TRIVIA GAME PERHAPS YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED QUESTIONS LIKE, WHAT IS THE LONGEST BOOK IN THE BIBLE? AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY PSALMS BUT IT'S ACTUALLY FROM A WORD OR VERSE STANDPOINT, IT'S JEREMIAH. THE SHORTEST BOOK OF THE BIBLE IS SECOND JOHN AT ONLY A CHAPTER LONG AND IT'S NOT EVEN A VERY LONG CHAPTER. THE LONGEST CHAPTER IN THE BIBLE IS PSALM 119. THE SHORTEST CHAPTER BEING JUST TWO CHAPTERS BEFORE PSALM 117. THE LONGEST VERSE IS ESTHER 8:9 AND I WON'T QUOTE THAT FOR YOU THIS MORNING. I'LL LET YOU LOOK THAT ONE UP YOURSELF. BUT THE SHORTEST VERSE OF THE BIBLE IS SOMETHING THAT YOU MIGHT ALREADY KNOW AND THAT IS FROM JOHN 11:35, "JESUS WEPT." IT IS A POWERFUL PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE THAT DEMONSTRATES THE HUMANITY OF OUR LORD BUT ALSO THE DEITY OF OUR LORD AND HIS LOVE FOR US. SO I WAS VERY IMPRESSED TO SEE OVER THE PAST SEVERAL WEEKS THE STUDY THAT WE'VE BEEN EXPLORING HERE ON THIS TELEVISION PROGRAM TO BE ONE OF TEARS. THE MAJOR THEME THAT WE'VE BEEN STUDYING IS BEING MINDFUL OF YOUR TEARS. AND IT COMES FROM A PASSAGE IN SECOND TIMOTHY CHAPTER 1 VERSES THREE AND FOUR WHERE PAUL TOLD THE YOUNG PREACHER TIMOTHY, "I THANK GOD, WHOM I SERVE WITH A PURE CONSCIENCE, AS MY FOREFATHERS DID, AS WITHOUT CEASING I REMEMBER YOU IN MY PRAYERS NIGHT AND DAY, GREATLY DESIRING TO SEE YOU, BEING MINDFUL OF YOUR TEARS, THAT I MAY BE FILLED WITH JOY." OVER THE PAST SEVERAL WEEKS WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THE POWER OF TEARS. WE'VE TALKED ABOUT TEARS OF MERCY, SERVICE, AND SUFFERINGS. WE'VE EXAMINED TEARS OF WARNINGS, CORRECTION, AND COMPASSION. AND THIS MORNING I GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT, SOMETHING WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND AND PERHAPS UNDERSTAND EVEN BETTER. AND THAT IS THE TEARS THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH REPENTANCE.

I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND FOR JUST A MOMENT BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER, I WANT YOU TO REALIZE THAT BEING SORRY AND REPENTING ARE NOT THE SAME THING. I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT UPFRONT BECAUSE WE'RE TO EXAMINE THAT JUST A LITTLE MORE CLOSELY. BUT A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY ARE THE SAME AND I WANT US TO BE READY TO EXPLORE THROUGH THE SCRIPTURES WHY THEY ARE DIFFERENT BUT WHY THEY ARE RELATED TO AND RELIANT UPON ONE ANOTHER IN ORDER TO BE PLEASING TO GOD. WHEN I WAS GIVEN THIS PARTICULAR TOPIC, I WAS ASKED TO REFERENCE HEBREWS CHAPTER 12 AND I'M GOING TO REFERENCE THAT IN JUST A MOMENT. BUT IF YOU HAVE YOUR BIBLES THIS MORNING I'D LIKE FOR YOU TO TURN BACK IN THE OLD TESTAMENT OF THE FIRST BOOK OF THE BIBLE, GENESIS CHAPTER 25 VERSES 28 THROUGH 34 WHERE WE READ THE STORY OF JACOB AND ESAU. WE READ THAT, "ISAAC LOVED ESAU BECAUSE HE ATE OF HIS GAME, BUT REBECCA LOVED JACOB." AND PARENTS, LET ME JUST SAY RIGHT NOW DON'T PLAY FAVORITES WITH YOUR KIDS. IT DOESN'T WORK WELL. IT DIDN'T WORK WELL WITH ABRAHAM AND HIS SON ISAAC AND ON INTO JACOB. AND SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE SEE THAT RIGHT UP FRONT. THERE ARE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THAT KIND OF THING. BUT BECAUSE OF THE FAVORITISM THAT EXISTED IN ISAAC'S FAMILY, BECAUSE ISAAC LOVED ESAU AND REBECCA LOVED JACOB, THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF AN ADVERSARIAL SITUATION GOING ON HERE. AND WE READ, "WHEN JACOB HAD COOKED STEW, ESAU CAME IN FROM THE FIELD AND HE WAS FAMISHED." AND REALIZE THAT BECAUSE ESAU WAS THE FIRSTBORN OF THE TWO, ESAU WOULD BE THE ONE WITH THE BIRTHRIGHT. HE WOULD BE THE ONE TO RECEIVE THE BLESSING. BUT JACOB TRICKS ESAU OUT OF BOTH. AND IN THIS PARTICULAR PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE IN VERSE 30, "ESAU SAID TO JACOB, 'PLEASE LET ME HAVE A SWALLOW OF THAT RED STEW THERE, FOR I AM FAMISHED.' THEREFORE HIS NAME WAS CALLED EDOM. BUT JACOB SAID FIRST, 'SELL ME YOUR BIRTHRIGHT.' ESAU SAID, 'BECAUSE I AM ABOUT TO DIE; SO OF WHAT USE THEN IS THE BIRTHRIGHT TO ME?'" ANY OF US OF WHO HAVE EVER GONE ON SOME KIND OF CROSS COUNTRY CAR VACATION WITH OUR FAMILIES HAVE ALWAYS HEARD SOMEBODY SAY, WHEN ARE WE GONNA STOP TO EAT? I'M STARVING! WELL, WE'RE NOT REALLY STARVING AND I DON'T BELIEVE THAT ESAU WAS REALLY STARVING EITHER. BUT HE WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT HE WAS JUST ABOUT TO DIE AND IF HE DIDN'T GET THAT BOWL OF STEW THEN THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WOULD HAPPEN. AND SO HE ACTUALLY REASONS IN HIS MIND, WHAT USE IS MY BIRTHRIGHT IF I'M ABOUT TO DIE? "AND JACOB SAID TO HIM, 'FIRST SWEAR TO ME.' SO HE SWORE TO HIM, AND SOLD HIS BIRTHRIGHT TO JACOB. THEN JACOB GAVE ESAU BREAD AND LENTIL STEW; AND HE ATE AND DRANK AND ROSE AND WENT ON HIS WAY. THUS ESAU DESPISED HIS BIRTHRIGHT." SO THAT WHICH WAS HIS, THAT WHICH HE WOULD HAVE RECEIVED, WAS NOW THAT WHICH HE DESPISED.

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

NOW THE HEBREWS WRITER IS WRITING TO A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN PURCHASED BACK THEIR SINS AND THE PRICE OF THEIR SINS BOUGHT BACK BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS. THEY HAVE BEEN REDEEMED. AND IN THAT PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE THAT WE JUST READ THE WARNING IS DON'T FALL SHORT OF THAT WHICH YOU HAVE. DON'T GIVE IT UP FOR A MOMENT'S PLEASURE. DON'T GIVE IT UP FOR A MOMENT'S SIN AS ESAU DID. AT THE END OF THAT TEXT WE READ THAT ESAU FOUND NO PLACE FOR REPENTANCE THOUGH HE SOUGHT FOR IT WITH TEARS. WAS ESAU SORRY? YES HE WAS! DID ESAU FIND RESOLUTION? NO HE DID NOT! WHY NOT? BECAUSE HE FOUND NO ROOM FOR REPENTANCE. HE DISLIKED HIS BROTHER. HE DISLIKED THE BIRTHRIGHT. BUT HE WAS NOT ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS OWN ACTIONS AND WHY IT WAS THAT HE FOUND HIMSELF IN THAT PREDICAMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

NOW, WHEN I READ A STORY LIKE THAT THAT REMINDS ME OF PAUL AND THE CHURCH AT CORINTH. IF YOU'VE EVER READ FIRST CORINTHIANS YOU WILL READ A LETTER THAT IS WRITTEN IN LOVE AND PLEASE UNDERSTAND IT WAS WRITTEN IN LOVE. BUT IT IS A LETTER OF REBUKE. AND A LOT OF TIMES WE READ AND WE LEARN IN THE BIBLE AND WE UNDERSTAND THOSE OF US WHO ARE PARENTS OR HAD GOOD PARENTS WE REALIZE THAT SOMETIMES WE REBUKE OR WE CORRECT OR WE DISCIPLINE THOSE THAT WE LOVE BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM IN THE MIDST OF A MISTAKE. AND WE DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM CONTINUE TO MAKE THOSE MISTAKES AS THEY MOVE ALONG. AND SO IN FIRST CORINTHIANS PAUL REBUKES THE CHURCH AT CORINTH FOR A NUMBER OF THINGS. IN CHAPTER 1 THEY ARE A CHURCH DIVIDED. IN CHAPTER 5 THERE IS A MAN, A MEMBER OF THE CONGREGATION IN CORINTH WHO IS LITERALLY BEHAVING IN A TERRIBLE WAY. HE IS IN AN ADULTEROUS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS FATHER'S WIFE. SOMETHING THAT PAUL SAYS NOT EVEN THE GENTILES DO THAT! WE SEE FURTHERMORE THAT THE CHURCH IN CORINTH IS NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. AND PAUL WARNS THEM. HE SAYS, DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT A LITTLE LEAVEN LEAVENS THE WHOLE LUMP OF DOUGH? YOU JUMP FORWARD INTO CHAPTER 11 AND YOU HAVE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ENGAGING IN WORSHIP AS THEY OUGHT TO BUT THEY'VE TURNED THE LORD'S SUPPER INTO A FIRST COME FIRST SERVE ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BUFFET. LATER ON IN CHAPTERS 12, 13, AND 14 WE DEAL WITH SELFISHNESS, NOT UNDERSTANDING THOSE THINGS THAT ARE ETERNAL BUT COVETING THOSE THINGS THAT ARE TEMPORAL. AND OF COURSE, WE SEE GREAT MISUNDERSTANDINGS IN CHAPTER 15 REGARDING THE RESURRECTION. PAUL TELLS THEM THROUGHOUT THE BOOK YOU GUYS HAVE GOT TO CHANGE! YOU GUYS GOTTA TURN YOUR LIVES AROUND, GO BACK TO WHAT YOU DID AT THE BEGINNING, REPENT, AND BE RESTORED TO THE LORD. WELL, INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH THAT SEEMS TO BE A MESSAGE THAT WAS HEARD AND EXCEPTED BY MANY OF THE CHURCH AT CORINTH. BECAUSE IN SECOND CORINTHIANS PAUL ACKNOWLEDGES THAT CHANGE HAS TAKEN PLACE. AND A GREAT PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE IN SECOND CORINTHIANS CHAPTER SEVEN, VERSES EIGHT THROUGH 11 READS THE FOLLOWING AND REMEMBER TO LISTEN TO THE WORDING FOR SORROW AND THE WORDING FOR REPENTANCE. IN SECOND CORINTHIANS 7 BEGINNING IN VERSE EIGHT PAUL SAYS, "FOR THOUGH I CAUSED YOU SORROW BY MY LETTER, I DO NOT REGRET IT; THOUGH I DID REGRET IT. FOR I SEE THAT THAT LETTER CAUSED YOU SORROW THOUGH ONLY FOR A LITTLE WHILE." NOW, PAUL IS UNLIKE ANY ONE OF US OR IS NO DIFFERENT FROM ANY ONE OF US FROM THE STANDPOINT, HE DIDN'T WANT TO HURT SOMEBODY. I HOPE THAT YOU'RE LIKE THAT. YOU DON'T WANT TO HURT PEOPLE'S FEELINGS! BUT SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO SAY AND DO THE THINGS THAT ARE FOR SOMEBODY'S GOOD THAT MAY FOR THE MOMENT UPSET THEM. BUT FOR THE LONG TERM IS BENEFICIAL TO THEM. THAT'S WHAT PAUL IS SAYING HERE. HE SAYS, "I NOW REJOICE (EVEN THOUGH I WAS SORRY THAT I HAD TO WRITE YOU THAT LETTER) I NOW REJOICE THAT YOU ARE MADE SORROWFUL (NOT THAT YOU ARE MADE SORROWFUL BUT THAT YOU WERE MADE SORROWFUL) TO THE POINT OF REPENTANCE. FOR YOU ARE MADE SORROWFUL ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD SO THAT YOU MIGHT NOT SUFFER IN ANYTHING, LOSS AND ANYTHING THROUGH US. FOR THE SORROW THAT IS ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD PRODUCES A REPENTANCE WITHOUT REGRET LEADING TO SALVATION. BUT THE SORROW OF THE WORLD PRODUCES DEATH." DID YOU NOTICE THAT?

THERE ARE TWO SORROWS THAT ARE MENTIONED THERE. A SORROW OF THE WORLD AND A GODLY SORROW. NOW, THE SORROW OF THE WORLD IS REAL SIMPLE. THAT'S BEING SORRY YOU GOT CAUGHT. A LOT OF PEOPLE GO SPEEDING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND WHEN THEY SEE THOSE LIGHTS BEHIND THEM IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR AND THEY RECEIVE THAT TICKET THAT THEY HAVE TO GO TO COURT AND PAY LATER, OH, THEY ARE SORRY THEY GOT THAT TICKET! BUT THE MOMENT THAT THE POLICE OFFICER IS OUT OF SIGHT THEY GO RIGHT BACK TO SPEEDING AGAIN. THAT'S NOT GODLY SORROW. THAT'S WORLDLY SORROW. GODLY SORROW IS BEING SORRY YOU HAVE HURT GOD WITH YOUR SIN. AND WHAT HE SAYS IS GODLY SORROW PRODUCES SOMETHING. SOMETHING THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE SORROW ITSELF. IT IS AN ACTION AND THAT IS THE REPENTANCE. AND IF I'M TRULY SORRY FOR WHAT I'VE DONE IF I'M TRULY SORRY THAT I'VE HURT MY LORD, IF I'M TRULY SORRY THAT THE SON OF GOD CAME TO EARTH AND LIVED AS ONE OF US, NEVER HAVING DONE ANYTHING WRONG AND THAT WAS WILLING TO DIE ON THE CROSS TO PAY THE PRICE FOR MY SIN. WHAT I AM TRULY SORRY THAT I SENT HIM TO THE CROSS THEN I'M PROMPTED TO ACT AND I'M PROMPTED TO REPENT. AND A REPENTANCE, A TRUE REPENTANCE, IS A CHANGE OF THOUGHT. IT'S A CHANGE OF THE WORDS THAT I SAY. IT'S A CHANGE OF LIFE THAT I LIVED. IT'S A COMPLETE 180; TURNAROUND FROM THE SIN AND SELFISHNESS THAT I WAS FOLLOWING TO THE LORD AND HIS WILL FOR MY LIFE. WE SEE EXAMPLES OF THIS IN SCRIPTURE. LET ME GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE. LET ME GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE FIRST OF ALL OF WORLDLY SORROW. IN MATTHEW CHAPTER 27 VERSES THREE THROUGH FIVE WE READ THE STORY OF JUDAS. NOW, WE REMEMBER HIM AS ONE OF THE APOSTLES OF JESUS WHO BETRAYED JESUS. AND I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY TO WHAT EXTENT HE THOUGHT THINGS WERE GOING TO UNFOLD BUT WHEN HE SAW WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO JESUS, WHEN HE SAW THE ABUSE THAT HE WAS GOING THROUGH, WHEN HE REALIZED WHAT WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN HE WAS SUDDENLY SORROWFUL. THE BIBLE SAYS THAT HE FELT REMORSE. HE RETURNED THE 30 PIECES OF SILVER AS IF HE COULD UNDO WHAT HE HAD DONE. BUT YOU CAN'T UNDO THE PAST, YOU CAN ONLY DO BETTER IN THE FUTURE. BUT AS A RESULT OF THIS, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS SORRY, HE DID NOT REPENT. HE DID NOT TRY TO CHANGE. HE WENT ON WITH HIS LIFE. A LIFE THAT WAS VERY SUDDENLY CUT SHORT. BECAUSE WE READ AFTER HE THREW THOSE 30 PIECES OF SILVER DOWN THAT HE WENT OUT OF THE SANCTUARY OF THE TEMPLE HE DEPARTED AND HE WENT AWAY AND HANGED HIMSELF.

NOW THINK ABOUT PETER ON THE OTHER HAND IN LUKE CHAPTER 22 VERSES 55 THROUGH 62. YOU REMEMBER HOW JESUS HAD TOLD PETER HE SAID, THIS NIGHT YOU WILL BETRAY ME. YOU WILL DENY ME THREE TIMES. BUT IT'S INTERESTING THAT EVEN THOUGH HE DID RECEIVE THAT WARNING HE STILL BETRAYED JESUS. HE STILL DENIED HIM THREE TIMES SAYING TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SAYING YOU ARE WITH THIS JESUS. YOU ARE WITH THE NAZARENE. HE SAID I AM NOT THREE DIFFERENT TIMES. BUT THE THIRD TIME, AND IN LUKE'S PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE ONLY, THE THIRD TIME HE DENIED JESUS WE READ THAT JESUS TURNED AROUND FROM THE MIDST OF THE COURTYARD LOOKED AT PETER REALIZING WHAT HE HAD DONE. PETER WENT AWAY AND WEPT. BRETHREN, LET'S BE FILLED WITH A GODLY SORROW THAT LEADS TO REAL CHANGE THROUGH THE TEARS OF REPENTANCE.
